Katharine Mary Leigh «Kate» Baldwin
1960-2024
The family of
Katharine Mary Leigh «Kate» Baldwin is heartbroken to
announce her passing on November 24, 2024 in Valley Hospice,
Kentville, following a recent illness.
She was born in
Montreal on March 13, 1960 and attended Hudson High School, where she
excelled both athletically and as a musician playing in a jazz band in
a number of Montreal clubs.
Following her brother
east to Acadia University, in 1978, she travelled by train to Saint
John, crossed on the Digby ferry and biked on her 10 speed to
Wolfville.
She took a break from
her studies at Acadia, hitchhiked across Morocco and Spain and then
furthered her studies in French for two years in Poitiers and in
Perpignan, France.
She returned to Nova
Scotia and began a long and successful teaching career in several
schools in Kings County, retiring several years ago from her last
position teaching French immersion at New Minas Elementary. Her
creative approach to teaching and her classroom antics are fondly
remembered by her former students. Kate was a talented tennis player
and won numerous titles at tournaments in the Annapolis Valley and in
Halifax.
She adored and was
devoted to her two children, Miklos and Ilona and she was so
appreciative that the kids grew up among such loving and supportive
friends and neighbours on Chestnut Avenue.
She loved her many
friends whom she had met through the Badminton Nova Scotia
community.
In recent years, she
was ‘host mother’ to many Acadia International
students who lived in her home. Kate’s house was a happy
gathering place for these students who celebrated many group dinners
together. To them, she was a ‘mother’, mentor and
friend. She loved them and they loved her.
She was predeceased by
her parents, Willard and Lillian Baldwin (Slater), Maders Cove. She is
survived by her son, Miklos; daughter, Ilona; sister, Patricia, Salt
Spring Island; brother, Peter, Starrs Point; and brother, Robert,
Upper Falmouth.
Kate was known for her
infectious sense of humor, always able to make those around her laugh
or smile, no matter the circumstances. She had a remarkable ability to
brighten any room with her wit and laughter. Unapologetically herself,
Kate never worried about what others thought, staying true to her
unique spirit and joy for life.
We are forever
grateful for the wonderful care of so many nurses and to Dr. Stephanie
Scott, Dr. Benjamin Sabine, and to the staff at Valley
Hospice.
Cremation has taken
place. There will be no service at this time. A celebration of life
will be held in the New Year. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory
may be made to the SPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society, or Valley
Hospice Foundation, Kentville. Funeral arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
Kate was
truly a free spirit, and she still is.
