We are deeply saddened to announce Karen Leslie Georgison DeCal, 67, of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, January 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Karen was born in Morden, MB on November 13, 1956 to Donald and Emma (Alsop) Georgison. She grew up in Thunder Bay and graduated from Confederation College. Karen married her loving husband Rick in 1979 and they spent 42 wonderful years together. They welcomed their first son Isaac while living in Saskatoon, then moved back to Thunder Bay, settling in Current River, where they were blessed with two more sons, Eli and Luke. Karen started her career with Canada Revenue Agency before taking time off to raise her children. She later returned to work at Canada Post before she decided to continue her education in Human Resources.
Karen was very fortunate to have a large group of loving and supportive family and friends. She was always the most popular person in the room and had no problem making friends, even if she didn’t speak the same language. Karen was so proud of her Ukrainian and Scottish roots and embraced Rick’s Italian heritage. They made visits to their homelands, celebrated cultural holidays and foods, and passed this love and pride on to family and friends. She also made many trips Asia, where she spent much time in Vietnam.
Above all else, Karen cherished spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her most heart-warming times were spent with her grandsons Nicholas and Theo and granddaughter Jayla. Her visits with them, whether in person or over FaceTime, meant so much to her.
Karen will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Isaac (Natalie), Eli (Thuy), Luke (Jessica), and grandchildren, Nicholas, Theo and Jayla. She is also survived by her brother, Don (Kathy) and sisters, Gail (Alex), Janet (Paul), Debbie (Roy) and their families, and her husband Rick’s siblings and families. She was predeceased by her husband Rick, her parents, Don and Emma, and her in-laws, Batista and Bruna DeCal.
The family wishes to acknowledge the outpouring of love and support from their family and friends. They would also like to thank the staff of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, with special thanks to the wonderful ICU and emergency care staff.
A celebration of life will be planned for late spring/early summer of 2024. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the TBRHS Foundation would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
