Breen Welton,
Karen Darlene, age 56, of Cape Jack, Antigonish County, passed away
peacefully on January 10, 2024, in St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital, Antigonish, in the presence of her family and friends
following a lengthy and private battle with
cancer.
Born in
Antigonish, she was a daughter of Damien and Myrtle (Meagher)
Breen.
Karen was a
retired teacher and a certified yoga instructor who spent the early
part of her career out west and the majority teaching Grade 1 at
Baddeck Academy. Since her retirement, she lived life to the fullest
and crossed many things off her bucket list. She travelled near and
abroad, from Costa Rica to Europe, and danced with friends at the
Shore Club. She had many walks in nature, bonfires, and sunsets with
friends and her dog, Wesley. Most importantly, though, she has watched
her son, Dell, grow and mature, both as an athlete and a student.
She enjoyed
educating people in living a healthier lifestyle, even leading online
classes. She had a talent for anything crafty and writing stories,
many of which were published, in her attempts to help others.
Karen was always community minded and made meaningful
connections and built relationships everyday. She taught
yoga and mindfulness techniques to all ages including very young
children to support their mental and physical health. She
supported many individuals and groups over the years including paint
and sips groups in several local communities.
Besides her
parents, she is survived by her son, Dell, of Kingston, and his
father, Rick Welton, of Baddeck; brothers, Darryl (Tammy), Cape Jack;
and Trevor, Calgary; nieces and nephews, Brooke, Jake, Tayden, and
Shayla; and many cousins and other
family.
Predeceased
by several cousins, including Danny Meagher who kept in close contact
with Karen.
The family
would like to thank Dr. Rice, Dr. Gillis, and all the nurses and staff
in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Martha’s, music
therapist, Rebecca McDonald; and social worker, Cathy MacGillivray,
who provided so much support to her. The family especially
appreciated the dedication and constant support that Karen’s
friends provided. We will never forget the love you shared
with all of us!
Cremation has
taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later
date.
In Memoriam,
donations to the Antigonish Town and County Palliative Care Society or
the Canadian Cancer Society
appreciated.
Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home,
