On the morning of Wednesday July 17th, 2024
Justin Joseph Debassige, Jidmoonh, in his 82nd year, surrounded by love of his family, began his journey home to the spirit world.
Son of Andrew Debassige and Eva Rose Debassige, Justin was the
4th oldest sibling among 13. Helen, Noel, Bertha, Levina, Edward, Nellie, Timothy, Elaine, Sally, Christopher, Earl, Christy.
Through his siblings Justin gained many brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews all of which he loved so dearly. Justin loved spending time with all of his family as much as possible, whenever he could. Whether living in Toronto, Petawawa, Ottawa or Sudbury his family would visit him or he would visit with them. As his nieces and nephews grew older, they too would stop in to visit and he would welcome all of them with pure joy.
Justin married Jeannie Corbiere on October 24th, 1964 and together they raised 4 children Anthony, Catherine, Steven and Kimberley Justin and Jean together created a safe place for other young people to land if they needed a home away from home.
Justin and Jean welcomed into the world with great pride, their 9 grandchildren: Darrin, Tyger, Abigail, Gage, Gracie, Aiyana, Jenna, Rhiannon and Genevieve, and 2 great-grandchildren Lincoln and Cohen all of which extended the pure love, joy and pride he had for his wife and children.
Justin enjoyed sharing the many stories and fond memories of his early years growing up in West Bay (M’Chigeeng) with his family, friends, aunties and uncles, and numerous cousins prior to his entering residential school. The Debassige homestead was especially important to him, helping shape who he was. Eventually Justin and Jean returned home and built their home on a portion of that homestead.
Throughout his time at Spanish Residential “school” Justin faced several challenges and yet he retained his language and spoke it fluently maintaining pride in who he was as an Anishinaabe with strong ties to his community. After his time at Residential “school”, Justin joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a medic working at National Defense Medical Centre as an Operating Room Technician for 31 years. Early in his career Sgt. JJ Debassige and his wife Jean were stationed in Germany for 4 and a half years. While there, they travelled around Europe, which gave them both a joy of adventuring and exploring new places. Justin was proud of serving Canada and he did so with dedication and honour. He joined the military November 17th 1961 and retired November 17th 1992.
Those that know Justin can attest that he loved his family and his community greatly. He was a fair and just man, respected by many with a sense of humour that encompassed one-liners that we are certain he would think up and hold on to, just waiting for the appropriate opportunity to use them. Justin could recall stories with such enthusiasm and animation that would hold you captive, those stories almost always ended with laughter or some sort of life lesson.
He will be forever remembered for his acceptance of all, his kindness, humour, quick wit, love of animals especially Sport, Makoonhs, Johnny and his adopted “girl-dog” Liza. If you knew him, you knew gratitude, love, forgiveness and hard work were important values to him, among duty, responsibility and honour. There will never be an end to his love and truly no good bye’s, it’s simply

Resting at M’Chigeeng Complex on July 20, 2024 from 12pm
Funeral service at Immaculate Conception Church at 11am
with burial to follow at M’Chigeeng First Nation Cemetery.
