Jurgen Soeder (79) of Boutilier’s Point, N.S. passed away with children present after a brief illness but lengthy battle with cancer and alzheimers on November 18th, 2024.
Born in Grohn, Germany, Jurgen immigrated to Canada at the age of seven. He grew up in Oakville, Ontario. At age 17, Jurgen moved back to Germany, staying with his maternal grandparents. While there he joined the crew of a training ship (Tall ship) and sailed twice on trips to South America, traveling through the Panama Canal. He returned to Ontario at the age of 21. During this time he worked delivering mail for Canada Post and got married. They moved to B.C. where he attended BCITgraduating with a diploma in Forestry, Fish and Wildlife.
Eventually they settled in Nova Scotia where he became a Federal Fishery Officer until he retired at age 58.He was proud of the work he did during this time such as going on Coast Guard ships, Swissair Flight 111 recovery team and many other operations. In retirement he worked looking after properties around Hubbards and surrounding area. After a couple years he moved on to become a special Constaple at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. He retired for the last time at the age 69.
Jurgen enjoyed scenic drives, stopping for coffee and talking with people. He was an avid reader and history buff. He loved the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and swimming. Even working for an Outfitter in Algonquin Park and was a member of the NAWEOA.
Family was important to Jurgen. He was very proud to be an OPA (grandfather). When his children were young they made annual trips to see family in Ontario. Jurgen also enjoyed many trips to Germany over the years.
Jurgen is survived by his ex-wife and mother of his children Gloria Soeder. Their children; Christa Cribb (Wayne), David Soeder (Abi) and Karen Soeder (Steven Ringer) ; Grandchildren Natalie and Emily Cribb, Kathleen, Michelle and Eric Soeder, Keigan, Brycen, Cierra and Amelia Ringer. He is also survived by 3 sisters and 5 brothers, many neices and nephews as well as extended family in Germany. Jurgen was predeceased by his father Werner Soeder and mother Thea Vidovic (Wege).
Jurgens family would like to give special thanks to the 3rd floor staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care, the hematology team at the VG and to the caring VON’s.
The Funeral will be held Friday, December 6th , 2024 at 11am at Ronald A Walker Funeral Home, Upper Tantallon. Reception to follow.
