Jules Burnell, 86 years of Duglad, Manitoba passed away quietly on October 14, 2024 after a short illness with his wife Heather by his side.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Heather, his sons Cooper (Tara), Jason (Joni), stepson Michael Smalby, step daughter Lori Smalby (Shawn), grandchildren Dale, Daniel, McKenna and Hayley, brother Harold (Judy), sister in law Mary Burnell as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Floyd and Nellie, brother Allan and stepdaughter Janice.
Jules was born in Vita, Manitoba on May 18, 1938 to Floyd and Nellie Burnell, and was the eldest of three boys. The family moved it in different areas of Manitoba and Ontario due to their father working on the track. For short time the family lived in Nova Scotia because their father was stationed there during the war. Jules attended many different schools while growing up. He had fond memories of school days in Giroux and Ste. Anne.
He started working with CNR in 1956. He wore many different hats in his 38 years of service which ended in 1994 as Supervisor of Signals and Communications. During his career, he worked in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He was well respected by his coworkers and made lifelong friends over the years. To celebrate his retirement, Heather and Jules went to Mexico with his brother and sister in law Harold and Judy. They repeated that trip a few years later. They enjoyed Mexico, but not as much as when they spent 11 winters in Yuma, Arizona. They loved the desert as there was always so much to do. They enjoyed quading, biking, golfing, and happy hours as well as day trips to Mexico to stock up on some refreshments. They took many trips down mid Eastern states to Florida visiting family, enjoying the sites and then travelling across the states to Yuma.
After selling the Yuma home, they spent winters on Vancouver Island. For their 25th Wedding Anniversary they went on an Alaskan cruise along with friends who were celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Their last trip this year was to Prince Albert/Waskesieu Lake visiting family. It was a happy time making happy many memories.
Jules liked to build anything from bird houses to homes. He’d like to help anyone in need and never asked for anything in return. He was just happy to help. That’s how Jules was.
He looked forward to coffee/lunch visits with family and friends spending hours sharing memories. He had a great sense of humour and he loved to sing ANYWHERE! . He was a likeable person.
Jules was a devoted husband and a proud grandfather and a wonderful friend.
Special thanks to Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their care and compassion towards Jules.
Please join the family to celebrate Jules’ life on Tuesday, November 12 at 11:00am at Seasons Funeral Chapel 576 Balsam Crescent in OakBank.
