With family at her side, our dear Julie peacefully slipped away in the early morning hours of August 16 in the Espanola Nursing Home where she had resided since 2020. It is said, a shooting star marked her passing.
Julie was born in Beaver Lake Ontario to Urho and Aune Harju (nee Tapper) on October 3, 1931. She had two brothers, Fred (pre-deceased) (Greta) and Henry (Joanna). She married Leo Luopa (pre-deceased) in 1949 and they were the proud parents of James (Sandra, nee Leson), Beth (Geoff MacQueen), Richard (Gail, nee Merton), Robert (Leena, nee Oman), and Ronald (Eileen, nee Oman). Julie and Leo owned and operated an ESSO service station for many years on highway 17 in Beaver Lake, next to her parents’ home.
An excellent cook and baker, Julie could magically whip up something delicious with whatever she had on hand. She always had a garden and she harvested summer fruit and berries to add to her imaginatively prepared meals and baking. Visitors were always warmly welcomed with fresh coffee and baking, which she always seemed to have on hand, especially everyone’s favourite, Finnish pulla!
Julie loved to dance and that was how she met Eugene Lahti, who also loved dancing. Dancing led to romance, which led to love and their marriage in 1991. Julie’s family happily expanded to include Gene’s children, Carl (deceased), Sharon (deceased) and Brenda (Bert McDowell), and their daughters Kara and Karleen.
Together, Julie and Eugene (pre-deceased) made a little paradise of their home on the shore of the Vermilion River in Beaver Lake. They both enjoyed gardening and their flower beds were show stoppers! They also began to travel and even went to Finland, but mostly they liked to be home with family and friends popping in to visit.
Julie will be dearly missed by her friends, family, many nieces and nephews and her grandchildren: Maija, Andrew, Kristy, Rita, Alek, Peter, and Kara & Karleen, as well as her great grandchildren Eila & Joey, Molly & Mara.
Julie’s cheerful nature and her ever-ready lovely smile warmed the hearts of all. The staff at the Espanola Nursing Home became very fond of her and cared for her with warmth and affection; she was a favourite! We extend our most sincere appreciation and thanks to all of the dedicated staff.
Julie made the best of every situation believing it was better to handle whatever life tossed her way, and she did so with grace and sisu.
Please join us in a celebration of Julie’s life on Saturday, September 2nd at the Beaver Lake Sports & Cultural Club, from 1 to 4 p.m.
