Julie Gibb, born on December 29, 1923, in Bruno, Saskatchewan to Harry and Mary Stumborg, was the fourth oldest in a family of ten children. Her siblings were Clarence, Florence, Jerome, Agnes, Eleanor, Bernie, Alvin, Eileen, and Rose, all of whom have passed away. Julie’s early life involved attending Bruno School and Ursuline Academy, where she balanced her education with chores like milking cows and sewing clothes for her younger sisters.
At eighteen, Julie attended Normal School and began her teaching career at Lucasville School. She married William Gibb on July 12, 1944, and moved to a farm near Bruno. Together, they had nine children: Harry (May 1945 – June 1946), Pat (March 1947 married to Ron), Jack (born in 1948, married to Kathy), Karen (April 1953 – June 2023, married to Garry), Joan (March 7, 1956 – December 12, 1986), Mary (March 7, 1956, to March 10, 1956), Allan (born in 1957, married to Maia), Doris (born in 1961, married to Louis), and Lois (born in 1961, married to Dave).
Life on the farm was challenging, especially when Bill fell ill with rheumatic fever and later leukemia. The family moved to Saskatoon in 1966, and Bill passed away on March 16, 1978. Julie, a devout German Catholic Liberal, was known for her love of discussing current events, often engaging in lively debates at McDonald’s after church on Sundays.
Julie took pride in her German heritage and was skilled in carpentry, sewing, cooking, and gardening. She was particularly renowned for her sewing, having made numerous dresses and wedding gowns. A passionate Toronto Blue Jays fan, she enjoyed watching their games on TV.
For 75 years, Julie was a dedicated member of the Catholic Women’s League. Her commitment to service extended to her community, church, and family, involving herself in various projects, including leadership roles, singing in funeral choirs, auxiliary ministry, and supporting women and refugees.
Julie’s home was a hub of activity, with her sewing machine placed strategically in the kitchen. She handmade quilts for the needy, crafted parkas for the homeless, and actively participated in community service, such as collecting jackets and produce for those in need. Julie was recognized with a Volunteer award from the YWCA.
Julie maintained her independence and continued driving until age 95, living self-sufficiently in her own home. Despite financial constraints, she was generous, often helping others with her sewing skills. In 2018, Julie moved to Preston Park and later to Trinity Manor in 2020. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of twenty grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
Her life epitomized the essence of service – selflessly helping and supporting others. Julie’s life was a testament to the power of love and service, leaving a lasting impact on those around her. In lieu of flowers, Mom asked that donations be given to Columbus Bosco Saskatoon (columbusboscosaskatoon.ca/donations). Funeral mass at Holy Spirit Parish will be at a future date. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories.
