We are sad to announce the death of Julianna Ritchie (née Smith) on September 10, 2023 at age 85.
Julie is survived by her nieces and nephews Derrian Smith of Saint John, Ben Smith Lea (Nancy) of Toronto, Alan Smith and his daughter Susan Smith of Belgium, Kate Kashetsky of Saint John and her daughter Tess Kashetsky and son Max Kashetsky of BC, and Matt Smith (Sandra) of BC. She also leaves behind good friends and neighbours who she enjoyed swapping stories with on her front porch. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Ritchie and her brother, Robert Adrian X.
Julie was born on January 30, 1938 and grew up in Toronto in a family of artists and spent many happy childhood summers in Waubaushene on Georgian Bay. She was a potter, peace activist, music lover, school teacher and lifelong learner with a curious mind. Fiercely independent, self-assured and possessed of a legendary dry wit, she had a story about every cat she ever met. Julie lived lightly on the earth in the house she loved in east end Toronto. She walked to do her shopping until her final year.
The family would like to extend our thanks to her caregivers at Michael Garron Hospital and South Riverdale Community Health Centre, as well as her friends at the Neighbourhood Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
