In the early evening hours on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Julia Speck passed away surrounded in love of family and friends. Julia was the beloved wife of Ken Speck (2008) and the mother of three caring daughters, Heather (Robert), Michelle (Pat) and Erin (Michael). Much loved Baba to Shane, Blaine, Liam and Anya. Predeceased by her parents, Stephan and Tekla Demkiw, siblings Anne, Leo, Mary, Jean, Halia, Tony and Leslie, aunt to many nieces and nephews. Mom was a tireless worker who always tried to help everyone. In the early 1960’s, Ken and Julia began a 39-year endeavour at the Nine-Ten Motel and Answering Service in Lindsay. Also, at this time Mom involved herself in catering and was the creator of a fancy sandwich business, all in helping to make ends meet. It was during this time that Mom made some very lasting friendships that remain until now. Mom not only ran the business but continued to look after Ken as his decline with Multiple Sclerosis worsened, while also being Mom to three young girls. The pace of work was always harried but Mom would have it no other way. She worked at only one speed – nonstop. Following Ken’s death Mom remained at home for several more years. In late October, 2015 a placement was accepted at University Gates in Waterloo. This transformed the way and manner that Julia continued to live life. Mom was now at a long-term care facility. The transition was not seamless as Mom longed for a place in the past, most often Alberta, her farming roots and home of childhood wonder. However, the love and care that Mom received from staff, residents and their families helped to ease the adjustment. While at University Gates Mom had a chance to grow in many ways. The friendships she developed; activities provided helped to give purpose. Mom will be remembered as the lady with the big smile, always dancing with her cane and wanting to help wherever needed. When at home in Lindsay and sitting with Mom at the end of a day, she would often look to the family pictures hanging on the walls and say “We must pack these in a box to take with me to Alberta”. Well mom, the pictures are packed, your trip to Alberta is near. God bless.
Julia’s family would like to extend their gratitude to staff, residents and their families at University Gates in Waterloo. A warm thank you to Drs. Niall and Lee-Poy who supported Julia in the kindest of ways. Also thank you to the doctors and staff at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay who have cared for both our parents over the many years. A special gratitude to Dr. Stephen Hainer of Lindsay who was instrumental in helping Mom live at home for so many years. As well, thank you to all the PSW workers who assisted Mom while at home in Lindsay. There are many people who have been a huge part of Mom’s life, both past and present. Thank you to all for your kind words, prayers and visits. Special bless you to Mona, for your faithfulness and love to Mom and I. During these challenging times, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local food bank or animal shelter. Friends and family are invited to share in a service of Julia’s life at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 45 Russel Street West, Lindsay on Tuesday, January 17th at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments following. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Lindsay at a later date.
