In Celebration of
Judith Anne Magney
November 4, 1944 –
April 22, 2024
Judith Anne Magney (Strachan) was born on November 4, 1944, near Ionia, Michigan, and died of heart failure in her home on April 22, 2024. She is predeceased by parents Jean and Howard Strachan, brother Norman (Linda) Strachan, and ex-husband William Magney. She is survived by siblings Sandi (Gary) and John (Martha), sons Aaron (Judith) and Kurt (Claire), two grandchildren, and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Judy grew up on farm and apple orchard in Michigan, completed nursing college, married, lived in Ann Arbor, and then moved to Toronto with her husband Bill. She worked as a nurse in many capacities (operating room, psychiatric and palliative care) and eventually as a community care coordinator. Helping others in their final phase of life was dear to her heart, and she volunteered at the Dorothy Ley Hospice for 27 years.
Family was important to her, and she often traveled to reunions and celebrations. She was a passionate gardener of flowers, plants and vegetables, who loved both spring planting and blossoming, and fall harvesting and turning under. She created gardens in every place she lived, and was involved in a number of community gardens. She also loved camping, and visiting natural spaces and parks. Judy was always up for an adventure, especially if there was a hike or walk or a chance to float above. She loved the CN tower Edge Walk, and took hot air ballon rides. Judy enjoyed reading and participated in several book clubs. She also enjoyed traveling, yoga, music, art, crafts, theatre, poetry, her full moon club, celebrating holidays, and playing euchre and bridge with friends.
A long time Unitarian. Judy was a spiritual person who saw beauty and magic in the earth and seasons. Judy believed deeply in community, caring, sharing, and that all people matter.
A celebration of life will be held at Turner and Porter Yorke chapel on May 3, 2024, at 11am, with visitation at 10am. In lieu of cut flowers, potted plants or flowers would be appreciated. For memorial, please consider planting something you enjoy for yourself or for someone else, or donations can be made to the Dorothy Ley Hospice.
