With deep sadness we announce the passing of Margaret “Joyce” Murray on Friday, January 12, 2024, at the age of 68, after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Joyce was born November 18, 1955 in Ottawa, Ontario to the late Stewart Murray and Mary Snider (nee Clark). Predeceased by her late husband, Leo Pappin whom she is united with again. Joyce leaves behind 2 daughters, Shannon O’Neill (Patrick) and Victoria Pender (Brad) as well as 3 amazing grandchildren; Matthew, Noella and Lita. The “baby” of the family, Joyce is predeceased by her oldest brother, Gordon Murray and will be missed by siblings Bruce Murray (Glynnis) and Loral Murray. She will be profoundly missed by her nieces and nephew, many friends, the community and her extended Flea Market Family!
Joyce was born and raised in Ottawa. In the early 1980’s, she moved to small town, Carleton Place with her husband giving up the city life to raise her family. From the mid-80’s, she was a pillar of the community. From being one of the founding bricks of the Lanark County Food Bank to working with the suicide help line for Lanark County Interval House, to working with adults with developmental disabilities. In 1922, she opened Murray’s Furniture, which soon expanded to a 3 story showroom of everything from new to antique and she became a mattress specialist. From there she owned our local Sears Dealer Outlet before resurrecting Murray’s Furniture and morphing it into the now operation of Murray’s Flea Market! Joyce was a passionate antiquarian and made many friends throughout her 30 years in business. She was also a loving, kind and gentle mother who’s bond she built with her children will last for eternity. Joyce was the very definition of “selfless”. Everything she did in life was for her kids and grandchildren. She would always make time for any sport or activity anyone was doing and would be found beaming ear to ear saying “that’s my baby!”, no matter who took the stage. Joyce was a person many people could lean on, was a safe ear to listen and always gave the best advice and knew just what to say to help any moment. The matriarch of our family has passed on but her spirit will never fade. Her children will carry non the legacy she started for years to come.
Friends are invited to a celebration of life on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 6pm – 8pm at Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue in Carleton Place, Ontario. Please come and pay tribute to an amazing woman! Light snacks and tea/coffee will be served.
