Passed suddenly away at her St. John’s home of over 55 years on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, Joyce Jerrett (née Legge), born in Heart’s Delight on June 30th 1940.
Predeceased by her loving husband, Daniel Jerrett; her parents, William and Marion Legge; her mother- and father-in-law, Nellie and Fraser Jerrett; her sister, Violet Sellars (Bill); her sister-in-law, Dallas Pitcher; and her brother-in-law, Ray Jerrett.
Left to mourn are her daughter, Gail (Barry), and granddaughter, Katherine Sweeney; her son, Bill (Michele), and grandson, Daniel Jerrett. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Reid (Stan) and Joanne Jerrett (Keith), as well as her brother-in-law, Rex Pitcher. She leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews (especially Barry Sellars), other relatives, and her very close friends. Of special mention is her remarkable graduating Class of 1961 from the General Hospital in St. John’s, along with her wonderful neighbors Judy Dawe, Donald and Pam Mackey, Gillian Janes and Glenn Cribb. She adored Geena Rideout who kept her laughing with her stories and Glen Chafe whose musical talent and compassion brought her so much joy.
Joyce lived a full and vibrant life. She resided in Heart’s Delight, Stephenville, Placentia, and St. John’s, often reminiscing about her childhood adventures. One cherished memory was playing on the cannons at Signal Hill during visits with her uncle, Walter Boone, the caretaker of Cabot Tower. She also fondly recalled growing up in Heart’s Delight, playing the organ in church, and walking home at night through the quiet, dark streets. Though never afraid of the dark, she often laughed about her only concern—bumping into a horse, as there were no streetlights back then. Joyce embraced life with enthusiasm and humor, always staying connected to simpler times. She was proud to have guided Queen Mary on a tour in 1963 during her visit to meet war veterans and to have participated in the sod-turning ceremony for the new General Hospital in 1960. As a nurse, Joyce devoted most of her career to delivering babies and working in the operating rooms of Cottage Hospitals in Placentia and Old Perlican, leaving behind a legacy of care and compassion.
Joyce was full of energy and always on the go. Whether attending her water aerobics classes, spending time with her many social groups, or playing cards into the wee hours of the morning with the Chafe’s and the Legge’s—including her close lifelong friends Sylvia Hudson, Kay Chafe, and Mable Legge—she truly made the most of every moment and special mention goes to Dave Hudson, Reg Legge, and Mac Chafe (1939–2020).
Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation will take place on Sunday, December 8, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 2 p.m, with a reception to follow in the lower lounge. The service will be live-streamed for family and friends unable to attend. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
