Obituary
The family of Mrs. Joyce Greba, beloved wife of the late Adam Greba, of Preeceville and formerly of the Endeavour District, sadly announce her passing on Tuesday, February 7. She was 90 years of age.
A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held on Sunday, June 4 at 2:00 p.m. from the Endeavour Recreation Centre in Endeavour, SK.
Memorials in memory of Joyce Greba may be made to the St. Mary’s Orthodox Cemetery, (PO Box 117, Endeavour, SK S0A 0W0), to the Preeceville Long Term Care Auxilliary (PO Box 348 Preeceville, SK S0A 3B0) or to a charity of ones choice as gifts of remembrance.
Joyce was born on August 21, 1932 at Winnipeg, Manitoba to Dmytro and Bessie Korman. Joyce had one younger brother, Don. They received their education at various places as their dad was a CNR Section Foreman and the family moved several times. She took her grades eight to twelve at Endeavour and then went to Teachers College (called Normal School at that time), in Saskatoon. She taught at Heatherbank, south of Lintlaw, for two years and one year at Laura, west of Saskatoon. She then attended St Paul’s School of Nursing in Saskatoon. After two years of studies, and working with sick children, she decided to go back to her first love of teaching. This was to the Memorial School District, a part of the Kamsack School Unit.
On Sept 19, 1958 she married Adam Greba. They farmed on the original Greba homestead near Endeavour. In addition to farming, Joyce also taught at Endeavour School for many years, full-time at first and then on a part time basis. Joyce and Adam were blessed with two children, Colleen and Russell. Mom always had a very friendly, welcoming way about her. She enjoyed everyone’s company. She really loved all people! Anyone who dropped by for a visit was always welcomed with a smile. She loved to visit, have a few good chuckles and for sure you never left without eating something! Mom had a strong faith in God. She was a member of the United Church of God, through which she had many friends, which kept in touch with her right through to her passing. This helped her through a lot of trying times! She loved reading just about everything, as she had a great collection of books. She enjoyed crocheting, music, baking, cooking, gardening, she also loved to write poems which really proved mom’s character, interests and humor. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, especially canasta, with Ella and Clara! She also enjoyed playing many games with her family and especially her grandchildren! Many times, when we had company over, as we lived in same yard, all the kids would go to Baba’s house for a game of Crokinole, scrabble or card games, and most likely too many cookies, but we knew they all had fun, including Baba! Many sleepovers also happened at Babas; old classic movies, even black and whites, food and lots of chatting, all inclusive! She was very interested in everything happening in their lives, as well as telling stories of her life, or sharing any knowledge that she thought important to share with them. Being a teacher was her true calling! She continued to share her skills and knowledge to all, even if they never realized they were learning. Mom also enjoyed many holiday travels with her daughter and son-in-law. She had traveled with them to England, PEI, BC and various other places, many times just going to their home in Vancouver, WA, or USA. She enjoyed spending time with them and their dogs, which we believed were her grand-dogs, being that she always talked about them and showed pictures of them as though they were her own. Many people that had known her, met her, or were a student of hers, remember her and always had something good to say about her or had a positive memory to share! She was always easy going, loving, friendly, funny and loved to laugh. We always thought she was quite blessed to live close to us and every day watch her grandchildren grow up! We realize now that it was us that were blessed! She will be missed, but never forgotten! Our memories and stories of her will live on.
She was predeceased by her husband Adam in 1987; by her parents; her brother, Don; her sister-in-law, Doris and precious grand-daughter, Quinn Greba.
She is survived by Colleen (David) Hofer; Russell (Teresa) Greba; grand-children, Alysia (Kyle) Dagg, Kyle (Ashlee) and Devin Greba and great-grandchildren, Adrianne and Blake Dagg. Joyce’s family are planning a celebration of life for her in June 2023. She will be placed to rest beside her husband and grand-daughter at ST. Mary’s Cemetery in the Endeavour district.
