Joyce Catherine Phillips
Joyce Catherine Phillips, 72, of Gananoque, Ontario, died November 24, 2023, at
Brockville General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born March 29, 1951, to Cecil
and Bessie Hayes, of Pembroke, On, Joyce graduated as a registered nurse in
1971, attaining the Governor General’s Gold Medal Award for proficiency in
general nursing at Brockville General Hospital.
Through the years, Joyce was a charge nurse at Pembroke General Hospital,
Ottawa Grace Hospital, Kingston Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General Hospital,
and Carveth Care Home in Gananoque. She derived great satisfaction from her
work, retiring in 2013 as Executive Director of the Kingston Family Health
Network.
Throughout her life, she was an immensely talented fabric artisan and painter, an
avid mystery reader and action movie aficionado. Joyce remained active in the
community, and amongst her beloved friends.
Survived by adoring husband Paul Phillips, daughters Robin Cushnie (Brent
Christoff) and Alison (Todd) Benoit, cherished granddaughter Andie Benoit, sister
Helen Hayes (Mike Petit), niece Cathy Goddin (Peter), and nephew Rob Rantz;
great-aunt to Darcie (Alex) and Riley (Sarah); pre-deceased by husband Keith
Cushnie.
