After a well-lived life cut too short, Joy passed away surrounded by her family at the age of 65. Beloved wife of Dr. Lawrence Freedman for 39 years, their union set a high standard of what a marriage could be. Adored mother of Erin, Michaela, and Evan Freedman, she was a devoted daughter to Delores Rosen and the late Harry Rosen, and sibling of Paula (Stephen Toope) and Eric Rosen (Rachel Nelson). An aunt, cousin, friend, colleague, and confidante to so many, her ability to navigate the world with force and sensitivity was marvelled by all who knew her.
Born in Montreal, she edited her high school newspaper before completing a B.A. (Hons.) in English at the University of Toronto. A desire to make documentary film then took her to Syracuse University, where she received a M.Sc. in Television, Radio and Film among a cohort of friends that remained close throughout her life. In 1989, bad fortune led to good when she and Lisa Olfman founded Portfolio Entertainment after the production company they worked for downsized. In just over thirty years they built Portfolio into a globally recognized production, distribution, and animation company for children’s and family programming. Some of their most memorable productions include Groundling Marsh, a musical puppet show about marsh creatures that nested lessons about teamwork and environmental stewardship, and The Cat and the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, an animated television adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic. In 2003, Joy and Lisa were awarded the prestigious Rotman Canadian Women Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Despite her numerous professional distinctions, Joy always maintained that her children were her greatest achievement.
The funeral will take place at Benjamin’s Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Ave W, North York at 12:00 pm. Burial to follow at Pardes Shalom Cemetery, 10953 Dufferin St., Vaughan. Shiva will be held at 94 Lyndhurst Ave, Toronto, beginning Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, then Tuesday through Thursday 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
