With sadness, we announce the passing of our amazing Sister, Mom, Grandma and Great Gran. Joy was pre-deceased by her husband Bill and siblings Ruth, Doug, Jim, Winn and her twin Jack. She is survived by her sister Fran; her children Valerie (Ed), Ron (Coleena), and Denise (Barney); grandchildren Bonnie (Rahul), Nathan, Anne, Russell (Daniela), Derek (Caity), Amanda (Dallas), Trevor (Robin) and Kevin; great-grandchildren Marina, Rohan, Raya, Bernadette, Torin, Ryker, Kelly, Enver, Parker and James. She also leaves her sisters-in-law Irene, Doreen and Bess, daughter-in-law Wendy, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Joy enjoyed a rich life of 93 years, loving her family deeply and serving her church community faithfully.
A Memorial service will be held at Lambrick Park Church, 1780 Feltham Road, Victoria on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 2:00 pm. Gifts in her memory may be made to Camp Imadene by cheque or online at www.imadene.com/donate
Joy’s Journey
Joy was born Dec 4, 1930, in Hanna, Alberta to Frank and Winnie Burdge. She was the sixth of seven siblings. She was a surprise package arriving unexpectedly half an hour after her twin brother Jack. Her family moved to Victoria in 1933 to start a dairy farm. She spent her growing up years on the family farm on Beckwith Ave. She enjoyed a happy childhood in a close-knit family and learned to work hard, getting up at 4:00 a.m. to deliver milk with her dad and brother before school and in her teen years bottling 60 gallons of milk daily after school. As her siblings grew up, married and had children (there were 25 in total) they stayed close and enjoyed many family events together. The farmhouse was often overflowing in love and laughter with aunts, uncles and cousins.
She attended Cloverdale School from grades 1 – 8 and then moved on to Mt View High School for grades 9 – 12. A highlight for her during high school years was playing on the girl’s grass-hockey team. After graduation in 1949 she took secretarial courses at Sprott Shaw for 8 months. She then worked for Scott & Peden (a local feed, grocery and hardware store) for 6 years.
On June 4, 1955, she married Bill Hampton at Victoria Chapel. She was now part of a new family, and she enjoyed her new in-laws and nieces and nephews. Visits to their homes in various places around B.C. were always looked forward to. Bill and Joy were very hospitable, frequently having people over for Sunday dinner, hosting events in their back yard and opening their home for numerous people to stay with them.
Bill and Joy had 3 children, Valerie born in 1959, Ron in 1961, and Denise in 1963. Joy was a stay-at-home mom being very involved in her children’s lives, taking them to school events, soccer games for Ron, piano lessons for all 3 and children clubs at church. The family enjoyed annual camping trips in their tent trailer, sometimes being joined by other families (the Biggs, Funks, Welches, Fryers) and enjoyed special trips to Disneyland twice, a road trip across Canada and an overseas trip to England with Ron and Denise.
Joy was a big support to Bill, and they enjoyed 38 years together before Bill passed away in 1993 at the age of 59. She was widowed for 31 years. She filled those lonely years by pouring herself into her family’s lives, staying involved at her church and enjoying outings and trips with her friends and family.
As her children grew, married and started their own families, she relished being a grandma. She had 8 grandchildren and was very involved in their lives. She was always a willing babysitter, attended school and sporting events and would host sleep overs. The grandkids who lived out of town enjoyed staying with her when they came to Victoria for extended periods. All her grandchildren loved her deeply. Now, her grandchildren are starting their own families, and she has loved being Great Gran to 10 young ones. She is also known as Grandma Joy to numerous younger friends.
Joy was a faithful member of Oaklands Chapel where she started attending with Bill after their marriage. She was very involved, taking on the role of Sunday School secretary, helping at Jucos which changed to Girls Club for 20 years and then helping at Awana getting her 20-year pin at age 82. She also headed up a monthly social committee at the church. She worked as the Church’s Office Secretary for 35 years until her retirement.
Camp Imadene was also important to her. She first attended in 1939 at age 8. She attended almost every year (except when Bill was ill and passed away) first as a camper and then volunteering in various positions – cook, head cook, assistant director and program helper until age 78. It was at camp that she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour. She was a faithful follower of Christ all her days.
Joy and Bill enjoyed traveling with friends and had some memorable trips to Hawaii, Australia, and the Cook Islands. After Bill passed away, she continued to travel, visiting Australia with Winnie when Fran’s husband passed, traveling to Ecuador with Fran and friends to see Denise and family, taking a cruise through the Panama Canal with friends and traveling to England with Jack when they were 80.
Her hobbies included gardening, knitting, sewing and needlework. She also loved to do crosswords.
Friends who were influential in Joy’s life include Isabel McKerracher, Mary Powell, Gwen Welch, Eleanor Anderson, Rachel Fryer, Alice Funk, Marian Kamstra, Fay Hennekes, Anne Sheppy, and Hazel Ryan. There were many more close friends from Oaklands Chapel where she enjoyed a very supportive church family for nearly 60 years. For the past 12 years she has enjoyed being a part of the faith community at Victoria Alliance Church.
Joy enjoyed a long full life of 93 years. She was fun loving, kind and generous. She got involved and had a servant heart. Her family was very important to her, and she was very important to us. We will miss her!
