Joy passed away at the Riverside Health Complex in Turtleford, SK., on January 10, 2024. Joy was the third child born to (Christian) Chris and Hettie Lee. She was born near Hughton, SK. She had two older brothers – Archer (1923), and Vernon (1925). She had two younger brothers – Forrest (1930), and Daniel (1942). She had four younger sisters – 3 that died in childhood – Helen (1931), Arlene (1934), Merle (1936). Her youngest sister is Faith (1945). Joy also had two stepsiblings from her father’s previous marriage – Edna (1914), and Kenneth (1916). She never met her stepsiblings.
At the time of her birth, her father was managing a farm somewhere around Sanctuary and White Bear, SK. How long Chris managed the farm is lost information. Chris was also a travelling salesman for Cressy Products, that is how Chris and Hettie had met. It was while living in this area that the family became Jehovah’s Witnesses.
In 1935, the family moved to the Marie Hill District, straight south of Waseca, SK. Chris and Hettie had purchased two acres south of the Marie Hill School and built a small house. In the front they ran a small store. About two years later, they sold their stock and Chris returned to travelling, selling Cressy Products, and teaching those he met about the bible. Hettie and the children found work at whatever they could.
Following Joy finishing her Grade 8 schooling, she began to work for Willy and Bertha Lundell, who lived in the nearby Milleton District. She remained with the Lundell family for the rest of her life. She had already left home by the time her brother Daniel and sister Faith were born.
On December 15, 1947, Joy and Herbert Lundell were married in Saskatoon, SK. There was an age difference of 16 years between them, but this never bothered either of them. (Until Herbert died and Joy was left alone). In October the following year, Brian was born and sixteen months following that, Ronald was born.
Joy and Herbert farmed with Herbert’s brothers until April 1971, when it was decided to sell the farm. In December 1971, Herbert, Joy, Brian, his wife Janice, and Ronald all moved to Nicaragua. They lived there for 7 years, teaching the bible to the local people. In 1978, Civil War broke out in Nicaragua, and all Canadians were asked to leave the country.
In 1978, Joy and Herbert set up a residence in Turtleford, SK. The next few years were spent between Sherwood Park – where their sons were, and Turtleford. In the early 1980’s they spent a winter in Costa Rica, then back and forth between Sherwood Park and Turtleford. Eventually in the early 1990’s, they took up permanent residence in Turtleford.
In 2010, Herbert died at the age of 99. In 2018, Joy moved into the Seniors Apartment Housing in Turtleford. In July 2023, she moved to the Nursing Home in Turtleford.
Joy is survived by her sons Brian (Janice) and their children Devyn, Terria, Jaleen, Jaden, and their families; Ronald (Pat) and their children Stacie, KeriLynn, Ryan, Cameron, and their families; her sister Faith (Ron) Frank and their families; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, in Mervin, SK., with a date yet to be determined. Once a date has been decided, please check again here for further details.
Donations in Joy Lundell’s memory can be made to Riverside Health Complex Long Term Care, in Turtleford, SK.
