Josephine «Josie» Sheppard Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Josephine “Josie” Sheppard (nee Lockyer), age 76, announce her passing on March 31, 2024 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital surrounded by her family, after a brief but brave battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents Anthony and Johanna Lockyer along with her two brothers Reginald and Valentine who only passed away 10 days prior to mom.
She leaves to mourn with the best memories: her best friend and husband of 56 years John; her devoted children: Glenn in CBS, Duane (Carla) in Dartmouth, NS, Joanne (Shawn) in New Glasgow, NS, and John in Stephenville. Mom’s greatest pride were her four grandchildren: Evan, Ian, Claire and Brooks. She was their sweet Nanny who made them date squares every chance she could and relished any opportunity to brag about them. Mom was a cherished sister to Theresa (Walter) and James (Beatrice) both of Lamaline, NL. Also left to mourn are: her brothers in law: Owen (Therese Marie) and Phil (Mary); sisters in law: Bernice Dunphy and Minnie Sheppard; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Mom met dad when she started teaching in Millers Passage, NL. They started their lives together in Stephenville and put down strong roots. She fished alongside dad and was his right hand in all they did from fishing to snowmobiling, bowling, square dancing, and many a night playing cards and sequence. They built a foundation cemented in hard work, love, and partnership. We will be eternally grateful for the care and love our dad gave our hero, our mother, most especially since her diagnosis and never leaving her side.
Our commitment to our communities, volunteering, and taking on leadership roles was learned by watching our mom and her involvement in so many organizations, sports and groups. She was involved in so many things over the years from being on the PTA, Minor Hockey Moms, Stephenville Minor Soccer, and TOPS. She was a leader, role model and cheerleader.
The greatest gift we could ever have was being her children and knowing that each of us were her favourites. She taught us many lessons, gave us more love than possible and taught us to be kind people and she disliked any form of arguing. She was the very best friend to many and had friendships that were family to her and to us. Tea time with Margaret was moms favourite pass time for over 40 years.
Mom will always be remembered for her homemade bread, quilts made with love, her radiant smile, her humour, and devotion to family. She will always be remembered, eternally missed and never forgotten. Our hero became our angel and we became shattered.
A visitation will take place at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville on Tuesday, April 2nd from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 PM and will continue on Wednesday, April 3rd from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 PM. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 2:00 PM from St. Stephen’s Church, West Street. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
The family would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the staff of the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital and the team at 4 North in the Health Science for their professionalism and caring that was shown to our mom during her stay. She was so lucky to be surrounded by love not just from our family and friends but by Dr. Lewis, Dr. Dwyer, Dr. Campbell, all the nursing staff, and each person she encountered on her journey. A very special nod to two nurses, Haleigh and Jayme, who showed not just professionalism but empathy and love that cannot be taught but with each encounter brought comfort each time they entered the room.
