Joseph Bowland Obituary
We are saddened to announce that on March 9, 2024, Joe Bowland set his last sail.
Born July 3, 1933, in Hamilton Ontario, Joseph Raymond Bowland came into the world, second youngest in a family of seven children. Like his father before him, Joe became a talented carpenter. He used his innate design skills for many interesting renovation projects over the years including the family home at Narralane Farm outside of Bobcaygeon. He was always eager to talk through his ideas by sketching his thoughts out on a paper napkin. This was most often done at the dinner table while enjoying some “nectar of the gods” (a cup of tea). It was at the farm where he established Bowland Boat Works in a new, purpose-built shop. His sons joined him in bringing his vision to fruition to produce the best racing class sailboat possible. And of course that was the M16 scow. A driving force behind the establishment of the Pigeon Lake Yacht Club, Joe soon had a fleet of scows racing weekly on Pigeon Lake. His enthusiasm drew new members every year. Wednesday night races and weekend regattas, sailing school and potluck suppers; this was the life on Pigeon Lake that he and other PLYC members enjoyed for many summers. Outside of his carpentry work and boat building, he had many passions: Jazz and live music (especially big band), sailboat racing (of course!) and when the water got stiff there was always ice boating to hold him over until the spring. A passion from his youth, the Graham Paige he once owned was something he always loved talking about. The good times he had in that car! Little kids brought him so much joy. Pappy especially loved teasing and having fun with his own grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A proud father, Joe’s family was his central concern; how they were all doing in navigating their way through the ups and downs of life. He wanted to help in any way he was able to make their journey the best it could be. If he had the opportunity to share any of his passions with his family and friends, that was the most wonderful thing for Joe. Always encouraged to come sail with him, ice boat with him, listen to good music with him and to engage in meaningful conversations about the spiritual side of life and knowing how to serve our best selves. Forever he will be treasured for all that he was and remembered for all that he gave to everyone.
He leaves behind his loving first mate Lynda Cartan and the best crew ever his children: Tom (Betsy), Peter, Catherine (Jeffrey), Ted (Cathryn), David (Mary). Predeceased by his parents Charles and Helen Bowland and daughter Janie and brothers Benny, Jack, Frank and sisters Lil, Lou and Helen. Survived by eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews.
Donations to Salvation Army or War Amps appreciated.
A celebration of life to be held in the summer 2024.
