Joseph “Joey” P. Gaudet, 69, Halifax: A Life of Laughter, Love, and Sailing Adventures
It is with heavy hearts—and more than a few chuckles at the memories—that we announce the unexpected passing of Joseph “Joey” P. Gaudet, 69, of Halifax, on November 25th, 2024. Born on May 2nd, 1955, to Ozelie and Ronald Gaudet in Halifax, Joey’s life was as colorful and spontaneous as the many adventures he embarked upon.
Joey leaves behind a loving legacy in his daughters, Victoria (32) and Christine (30), his cherished partner Trish Forsythe, and her children Emily, Melanie, and Kyle. He is also survived by his siblings Ricki (wife Irene, children Arelle and Philip), Roger (wife Linda, children Monique, Adelle, and Paul), Brenda (husband John, daughter Angela), and Jamie (son Jami Jr). Predeceased by his brothers George and David, he remains fondly remembered by George’s wife Nicole LeBlanc (children Ron and Danielle) and David’s wife Sherri (children Jessica and Andre).
Joey was a man who wore many shoes—and we’re not just speaking about the Sperry’s he wore on his adventures sailing around the bay’s of Nova Scotia. Over the years, he helmed a variety of businesses, from ice making to vending machines. But his truest love, aside from family, was the open water. Whether captaining the “Blue Horizon,” his beloved C&C 36, or trading sailing stories with fellow mariners, Joey was never more content than when he was charting a course on the waves.
He was Halifax’s unofficial “shortcut king”—even if his shortcuts were hilariously the longest way around. Joey’s daughters fondly remember these “detours,” along with his spontaneous plans that almost always ended with “weather permitting.” His iconic phrases, like “I gotta go see a man about a horse,” or the short version ‘I gotta go’, often left his friends and family rolling their eyes—and laughing along. One vivid memory includes Joey bursting into the house with an irresistible invitation to Victoria, who was bleary-eyed after a night shift: “Are you up for some 4-wheeling?” That was Joey—living for the moment, and always eager to share the ride.
Above all, Joey was a devoted father and the anchor in his daughters’ lives. He didn’t just show up—he showed up big, with love in every gesture. From late-night adventures to heartfelt acts of service, Joey made sure his girls always knew how deeply they were loved.
A celebration of Joey’s remarkable life will take place in the summer of 2025, with details to be announced. All are welcome to join in remembering a man who lived big and loved even bigger.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Victoria and Christine via e-transfer at christinejanetgaudet@hotmail.com.
In Joey’s memory, may we all set our sails for joy, love, and a little spontaneity—weather permitting, of course.
