Joe passed away on Saturday, October 12, with his daughter’s Janet & Gail by his side in Red Deer, Alberta.
Joe was born in Asquith on April 11, 1936. Joe spent his early years in Saskatoon working for St. Mary’s Parish (Catholic Youth Organization), organizing sports, social gatherings and events. It was here that he met his future wife, Mary and cultivated life-long friendships within the Catholic community. Joe and Mary were married on August 30, 1958. They moved to Regina where Wendy and Glenn were born. Shortly thereafter they moved back to Saskatoon where Joe worked for City Parks & Recreation managing outdoor swimming pools and as the assistant manager at the Arena Rink. The family grew to include: Kevin, Janet and Gail and at that time Joe worked as the Assistant Manager at the Centennial Auditorium. The MacLeod clan moved to Biggar in 1972 where he became a hotel owner. In 1977 they relocated to Red Deer, Alberta where Joe was employed by Parkland Savings & Credit Union as a marketing manager. Over the years he was an entrepreneur in a variety of businesses including Raven Printing and The Printing Place.
Joe and Mary lived in Red Deer until 1991 when they moved to Cudworth. Mary and Joe celebrated forty-six years of marriage before Mary passed much too soon at the age of 66 in March of 2004.
In the fall of 2007 Joe married Helen Sopotyk. Dad and Helen traveled on a Catholic Pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes and Rome.
Joe had a passion for athletics and remained involved in sports into his early
eighties as an umpire for slow pitch. He refereed basketball at University of Saskatoon and coached his children in basketball, fastball, and hockey. He enjoyed sing songs, kitchen parties, telling jokes and having a good laugh.
Joe was involved in his community and sat on many committees and boards
including Catholic Social Services in Red Deer. He served as the Mayor of Cudworth from 1997 to 2003. Joe was very active in the Knights of Columbus as a fourth degree member. He also became a lay member of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi. He served on parish council and sang in the choir as well as being a lay minister at St. Michael’s in Cudworth. Joe was also very involved with Columbian Industries and SARCAN.
Joe is survived by his wife of 17 years Helen; five children; Wendy Silvernagle (Ken), Glenn MacLeod (Dawn), Kevin MacLeod (Barb), Janet Dracek (Dwight), Gail MacLeod.
Eight grandchildren; Steve, Krista and Tanys Silvernagle; Joel and Jana MacLeod; Jakob MacLeod; A.J. and Christian Dracek and eight great grandchildren Dominic, Bode, Matteo, Logan Silvernagle, Joshua and Karly Sikkes; Mia and Joey Dracek. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Roger, Al and Bob Reaser.
Joe was predeceased by his first wife Mary (Reaser); parents Clara (Stack) and Alexander MacLeod; brothers, Jack, Doug and Clayton MacLeod; sisters Irene, Rose, Gertrude, June and Loretta. Sisters-in-law Eileen Kolla, Sylvia Reaser, Shirley Reaser, Val Kammermayer and Audrey Reaser. Brothers-in -law Joseph Kammermayer and Louis Kolla.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, October 19 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cudworth, Saskatchewan.
