Jørn (Swiss) Ulrich Iversen passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at London’s University Hospital, surrounded by his family, following complications from major cancer surgery.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife and soulmate of 60 years, Pamela (Kurry) Iversen, and their two daughters, Danielle Iversen of Grand Bend and Kirsten Iversen of Toronto.
Born at home on June 25, 1944, in Veijle, Denmark, Jørn was the eldest son of the late Asta (Hansen) and Thorkild Iversen. His early years were marked by the turmoil of World War II as his family fought for the Danish resistance. In 1953, seeking a fresh start, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Windsor, Ontario. There, Jørn’s parents and his two brothers welcomed a new addition, Jo-anne Iversen, who passed away in 2009.
Jørn attended Prince of Wales Grade School and Forster Collegiate where he became a basketball star. In 1967 he graduated from the University of Windsor. The following year he began his career at Coopers & Lybrand in Toronto, quickly rising to Senior Management by 1972. That same year Pamela and Jørn became inseparable and in 1975 tied the knot at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in old Walkerville. The Top Hat was their choice to wine and dine family and friends, followed by a private all-nighter at the Holiday Inn on the river!
Restless in his accounting career, Jørn, Pamela and Danielle Astrid moved to Puslinch in 1977, where they purchased and revitalized the (350 seat) Aberfoyle Mill Restaurant. In 1979, after countless months of renovating, they gave it a fresh new look, a new menu, and welcomed a new baby girl named Kirsten Olivia. After living above the restaurant in Aberfoyle he purchased a home in Speyside (Halton Hills) for a more normal family life. But, after continuous trips to Toronto for business and medical appointments, he decided to pack in the country in 1985 and move once again. This time to Toronto’s wonderful Rosedale. neighbourhood. There he formed a consulting company which brought success and made new friends with long lasting friendships. Jorn was a true entrepreneur, managing various businesses including a large fleet of children’s apparel stores in Price Outlet Malls and a chain of American Restaurants called People’s. In 2005 he and his wife settled in Tecumseh, On. where he continued to run a consulting company for a small group of businesses.
He discovered a new passion for racing at the ripe old age of 52, becoming a standout on race tracks across Ontario, Quebec, and New York State with his 930 Turbo Porsche.
Jørn will be remembered for his warm smile, blue eyes, big hugs and his unique collection of hats. He loved nature, the environment and wildlife. Jørn was always on the lookout for Hawks, Eagles and Blue Herons. He had a passion for politics, history and sports. He was an avid reader which made him everyone’s encyclopedia. Jørn was kind and generous, what was his was yours. He told the best jokes, with a dry sense of humour that even Bob Newhart would have loved! He admired Yogi Berra’s one-liners and enjoyed sharing them with anyone who would listen. He introduced us to his favourite TV shows, which he watched repeatedly: Paradise Island, Father Brown, Midsomer Murders, Taxi, Night Court, Becker, and, last but not least, classic movies such as Casablanca, The African Queen, Young Frankenstein, Little Miss Sunshine, Up, and Coco.
He delighted in making and sharing crepes, omelettes, danish bread, and pickles. His Hawaiian Carrot Cakes, baked year-round, were a treat for friends, neighbours, and healthcare professionals alike.
Jørn is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins from Canada and Denmark, as well as his two brothers Lars and Bent and their families. He will be remembered by his sister-in-law Sandra (Kurry) Rowe, her husband Ted, their children Kimberly (Kurt) and Jennifer (Jeff), and their grandchildren Ashley, Jessica, and Dallas. He will also be missed by his cousin Karin (Hansen) Jorgensen (Kurt), who brought Danish treats and joy to his life.
Thank you to the medical staff at University Hospital who cared for Jørn and went the extra mile to show how much he was loved during his last few days on this earth. We also thank Heather and John Arnott of London, On. for opening their loving home to us during this difficult time. He will be missed by the staff at Wadlands Pharmacy in Zehrs and by Dr. Abdulnasser Abdulahmeed, Dr. Anwar Sabeen, Dr. Syed Anees, Dr. Charles McFarland, Dr. Vladislav Khokhotva, Dr. Sirajeddin Ben Musa and Dr. Dusan Barisic, who looked after Jørn’s medical needs through many years of illness.
Jørn had an inner strength to survive and fight hard with no complaints, always thanking everyone for their visits and caring ways. Right to the end, he practised what he preached:
1. If you can’t fix it, don’t worry about it.
2. Only worry about the things you can control.
3. His religion was simple: BE KIND!
Jørn Ulrich Iversen will be forever missed by Pamela, Kirsten, and Danielle. He will always be in our hearts.
Cremation has taken place with the family’s first. A Celebration of Life will be announced later. Donations can be made to the World Wildlife Foundation or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
