Jorge Gomez Gaviria, aged 81, peacefully passed away in his sleep on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was surrounded by his loving family: his beloved and brave wife, Marta Gomez; daughters Luisa and Alexandra Gomez, along with their spouses, Maricella and Jorge; and grandchildren Julian, Valentina, and Alejandro. Jorge is survived by four brothers: Fernan, Ramiro, Alberto, and Paco.
An intellectual, athlete, adventurer, history buff, lover of classical music, and a source of endless laughter, Jorge’s life was a testament to curiosity and exploration. Originally studying law in Manizales, Colombia, his love for adventure led him manage the Nevado del Ruiz volcano hotel, guiding numerous tourists into the crater of the volcano. He also spent months living and studying the Colombian jungle with his brother Octavio. When he wasn’t venturing into the depths of the earth or the tropical jungle, he was gazing at the stars and planets above. Jorge was passionate about astronomy, and a firm believer in the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The mysteries of life and paranormal sciences captivated his mind, and our home overflowed with hundreds of science and history books. His dedication to knowledge and well-being left an indelible mark on his family, fostering curiosity, a passion for reading, and a commitment to exercise and healthy living.
Relocating to Canada in the early 80s, he cherished the opportunities the country offered. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his fifties, Jorge faced it valiantly, remaining active and undergoing experimental Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, twice, under the esteemed Dr. Lozano at Toronto Western Hospital. His resilience taught his family the power of acceptance; he never voiced complaints, maintaining unwavering spirits.
Gratitude extends to the exceptional nurses from St. Elizabeth, the compassionate PSWs from CBI Care and Community Care and Diana, his devoted PSW, who not only cared for him but also supported our loving and dedicated mother during this challenging period.
His life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 9th, at 12pm, with visitation 1 hour prior at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Parkinson Canada,, supporting vital research and advocacy against this debilitating disease.
