Obituary of Jon Brosi James Nutting
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jon Brosi James Nutting on Saturday, October 28th, 2023 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan surrounded by family. He will always be remembered as having an unwavering devotion to family, for being a sage colleague, a steadfast friend and a seeker of truth. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 41 years, Noella; his daughters, Melanie (Mark) Tracey, Brenda Spearman, Stephanie (Stephan) Nutting, Victoria (Rob) Nutting, Kristine (Brad) Nutting, Jacqueline (Richard) Nutting and Rachelle (Mark) Dumesnil-McLeod; as well as his grandchildren, Andrea, Erin, Michael, Bryce, Amanda, Adrienne, Evan, Madeleine, Luc, Eva, Danielle, Casia, and Liam; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marisa; his son, David; and his sister, Emma. He will be sadly missed by his extended family of the Nutting’s and the Dumesnil’s; as well as by his two adopted sisters, Irene Ositis-Schmeiser of Saskatoon and Larisa Ositis of Rosetown. Their wonderful parents, Dr Alex and Maria Ositis of Rosetown (both deceased), had unofficially adopted Brosi as their son.
His loyalty to family and friends played out in his generosity of spirit, giving his time to help when asked for guidance. There was never a shadow of a doubt that he could be relied upon and that he would help whilst incorporating his famous “Nutting grit”.
Often asked to speak publicly, he was naturally gifted. Brosi enjoyed fine tuning his elocution with carefully crafted speeches infused with his wit and self-deprecating humor. His family and friends also enjoyed his incredible sense of humor and comedic timing. Many evenings were spent laughing so hard that people were brought to tears.
A voracious reader, Brosi always had a variety of books on the go ranging from philosophy to history, as well as a classic or two. He was infinitely curious to learn more about the human condition which led him down many spiritual paths. His ecumenical curiosity and thirst for knowledge was a wonderful example for his family. Along with his passion for books, he had a love of nature and especially trees and birds. He enjoyed canoeing with his beloved wife Noella at Iroquois Lake, being in the mountains, or sitting by the ocean in Victoria and watching the ships come in. During their time together they traveled often with dear friends and went on many fun adventures in Europe and throughout Canada.
When expressing his opinion, his humility was frequently on display as he prefaced his words with “In my humble opinion…” As a judge, he was known for considering cases from a variety of perspectives and angles before reaching a conclusion or issuing his decision. This ability spilled into his personal life and was evident through his hunt for truth, wisdom and knowledge along with his commitment to lifelong learning.
Brosi was born at the hospital in Borden SK. On January 29th, 1936. His parents, Earle and Muriel Nutting, resided in Radisson with his older sister, Emma Eleanor. His father owned and operated a drugstore in Radisson and his mother Muriel was the community nurse. Not long after the outbreak of WWII, in September 1939, his father joined the Royal Canadian Medical CORP. He was away for almost 6 years. During that time his mother moved the family to Vancouver, then to White Rock, BC where they lived until his father’s return from overseas.
The family then moved to North Battleford, where Brosi took the remainder of his public schooling, graduating from NBCI. Following this, he commenced studies at the University of Saskatchewan where he received his LLB in 1960.
His articling began with the law firm of Maguire, Wedge, McKercher and he briefly practiced law with the firm of Sidney, Walker QC, until becoming Assistant City Solicitor of the City of Saskatoon. From 1962 to January 1979, he served as City Solicitor under the administrations of five different mayors.
In January 1979, he was appointed a Judge of the Provincial Court of Sask. He was then appointed as Chief Judge from 1995 to 2000. In 1976, he was granted the honorific title of Queen’s Counsel. While on the Provincial Court, he was active in the Provincial Judges Association, The Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges in the area of Administration and Legal Education.
Service to the city and the province was of great importance to him and as such, he served as a member of various community organizations. These included membership on the boards of the Mendel Art Gallery, Canadian Cancer Society (Saskatoon branch) and the Regional Psychiatric Centre (Corrections Canada), as well as first secretary treasurer of the Saskatoon Low Rental Housing Corp, President of Saskatchewan Provincial Court Judges Association, and President of Saskatoon Bar Association. In 2023, he was awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee medal for his contributions to the province.
His moral fortitude, upstanding values and joie de vivre will live on through his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will always carry in our hearts his words of wisdom, his generosity, his stories and his ability to make us laugh. It is with great appreciation that we would like to thank his loving wife, Noella, for taking such excellent care of our Dad over the last four years.
In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice or to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. Special thanks to the staff at RUH, Home Care and at the Palliative Care Unit for their support and encouragement.
The Funeral will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church (816 Spadina Crescent East), in Saskatoon, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023. His burial will be held at a later date in Radisson, Sk.
