Obituary of John Joseph MacIntyre
John Joseph MacIntyre born on August 18, 1934; passed away peacefully on November 19, 2023. John is predeceased by father; Alexander MacIntyre, mother; Philomena (MacNeil), and brother; Roderick.
John is survived by wife; Mary Leona (MacKenzie) MacIntyre, whom he was married to for 63 years. Sons; Richard, Roderick (Mary Leigh), Leonard, Donald (Heather). Grandson; Dylan (Shanta). Granddaughters; Kayleigh, Gracie, Alexis, Anita and great grandson John Joseph Edward MacIntyre.
John’s career began with an apprenticeship with Fairey Aviation for an aircraft mechanic trade. He also worked for the Halifax Dockyard where he learned machinist and toolmaker skills. Hewas soon hired by TCA (Trans Canada Airlines) in Shearwater which then became Air Canada, relocating to the new Halifax (Stanfield) Airport.
John worked for 31 years at Air Canada as a millwright and mechanic maintaining ground equipment, stationary equipment, airplanes, and whatever needed servicing or repair. John often had to fly to Gander and other regional airports for emergency repair of broken down equipment, and was well respected by those he worked with.
In retirement, John was a volunteer member of the North Shore Fire Department for 17 years. He also operated a Christmas tree farm in North Lakevale for several decades, enjoyed nature, the property where he grew up and always kept a vegetable garden. John loved to play darts and loved the social contact with other people. He enjoyed working on vehicles, overhauling tractors and other equipment for people in the community from his home garage.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday, November 24, 2023 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 pm on Saturday in St. Columba Church, Lakevale, Reverend Andrew Boyd presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, who took really good care of John, or to the North Shore Fire Department.
