Obituary of John Clarence Penwell
J. Clarence Penwell, age 76, peacefully went to his eternal rest on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, with his devoted wife by his bedside. Born in Grand Bank, NL, he was the cherished son of James and Janet Penwell. Left to honour his memory is his loving wife and friend Gloria, his daughter, Allison Penwell (Jason Haughn), son, Christian, step-daughter, Jennifer Penney, step-son, Christopher Penney (Jennifer Marshall), and granddaughter, Makayla Thomas (Noah Sutherland). He is also survived by his brothers, Don (Susan) and Charles (Marjorie), Sister in law, Glenis Pike, well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Clarence earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical College of Nova Scotia in 1970. He returned to NL and worked briefly with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro before returning to Nova Scotia to begin a 35 year career with Nova Scotia Power, where he made lasting friendships. While he loved working in his various positions with Nova Scotia power, he retired in 2005 to pursue new adventures with his travelling companion Gloria. Together they enjoyed meeting new friends and connecting with diverse cultures, thereby fostering his deep curiosity for learning from others.
Throughout his life, Clarence embodied integrity and compassion, lending his support through volunteer work at the Adult Learning Center, assisting adults in preparing for higher education, and at Beacon House Food Bank. He loved music and reading and instilled a passion for both in his children and stepchildren.
A loving husband, he supported and encouraged Gloria in her ministry. He was a valued member of the parishes she served and was deeply respected by the parishioners at St. John The Evanglist Anglican Church, Lower Sackville NS, and The joint Parish of St. Peter’s, Culmore and Muff in the Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe, Northern Ireland, UK. At the time of his death he was a member of St. Nicholas Anglican Church in Westwood Hills, where he was deeply cherished by his parish community. He was a devoted husband, a nurturing father, stepfather and grandfather, and a loyal friend, known for his warmth and empathy, the twinkle in his eye and his smile. He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved telling stories. His kindness and gentle sensitive nature endured him instantly to all who crossed his path. He will be greatly missed by all who hold him dear.
During the past eight months, Clarence was a resident of Parkstone Enhanced Care. His family is deeply grateful to the wonderful staff who provided excellent and compassionate care. Many thanks to Dr. Allison Dixon at the Geriatric and Mobility clinic who was an amazing source of support and empathy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.Albert Walker funeral home. A funeral liturgy and celebration of Clarence’s life will take place at St. Nicholas Anglican Church, Westwood Hills, on Saturday, June 8th, 2024. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Clarence’s memory to Parkinson’s Canada.
