John William «Jack» MacKay – 85, Truro,
passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday,
August 30, 2024, at Shannex Debert Court, Debert. Born in
East River St. Mary’s, he was a son of the late William and
Elizabeth (Chisholm) MacKay.
Jack became a bus and truck mechanic. Along with his
brothers, Jimmy and Louie, they founded Nova Enterprises Limited in
Truro which later grew into Nova Truck Centres with several
dealerships across Nova Scotia before retiring 11 years
ago.
Jack is survived by wife, Cheryl, having just celebrated
their thirtieth wedding anniversary earlier this
month. He also leaves to mourn his son, John (Cindy) MacKay,
Truro; daughter, Marina (Stephen) Wilcox, Valley; grandchildren, Corey
(Samantha) MacKay, Edmonton, Alberta; Ryan MacKay,
Truro; Jason (Ashley) Wilcox, Debert; Ashley (Sam) Gray,
Valley; great grandchildren, Harlow MacKay, Kara Wilcox, Ezra Wilcox.
He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Fraser, Peggy Woods;
sister-in-law, Beth MacKay; numerous family members.
Along with his parents, Jack was predeceased by his sister,
Verna Purcell; brothers, Jimmy, Louie; in-laws, Ray Fraser, Fred Wood,
Ruth MacKay.
Special thanks are extended to all the wonderful staff at
Shannex Debert Court (Lancaster Lane); they treated Jack with such
grace and wonderful care for the last three years as he battled
dementia. Also a special thanks to Laurynda Masee who became a family
friend after providing Jack with home care for many years before and
after he moved to the long care home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner
Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jack’s family
will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2024, and
funeral service 2 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2024, Reverend Dr. Brad
Little officiating. Interment in Bible Hill Cemetery, 41 Warren Drive,
Bible Hill. Flowers accepted or donations in Jack’s memory
to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia are welcomed. Tributes, words of
