OBITURARY FOR JOHN VANDERVEEN
John was born on July 3, 1938, in the small village of Wytgaard, in the province of Friesland of the Netherlands. He went to be with his Savior on September 22, 2024, at the age of 86, in Edson, Alberta.
John immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 9 years old shortly after the end of World War II. He ended up in Edson after living for a short time in Barhead and Peers, Alberta. It was in Edson he met and married his wife of 65 years, Grace Bil. He lived in Edson for the rest of his life.
John had quite a few jobs throughout his life, some in construction, but mostly he was in sales. He worked for Marris’ at 4 Way Wholesale, for Knoop’s at Midtown Bakery, and for Ron Linford at the Edson IGA. He started Johnny’s Groceteria in 1972 and ran the Glenwood store for many years. He worked around town for a few years after he sold the store, he was the sucker man at TomBoy, he worked at Robin’s Donuts, worked at Royal Pizza, worked at Ron’s Outdoor, and at Jensen’s Men’s Wear and he also had the Dollar Store in Edson, before finally retiring at 65.
John was predeceased by his parents Rudolph and Minnie Vanderveen and his parents-in-law Jack and Lorraine Bil. He was also predeceased by his older brother Henry and sister-in-law Mary Vanderveen, his younger brother Alan Vanderveen, his brother in laws Bennie Kloosterman, Henry Poelstra and Roy Allen. Also predeceased by family on Grace’s side, Roy and Mary Bil, Clarence Bil, Brenda and Jack Vaartstra, Cor Bil, Bill Bil (Willy), Lori and John Meszarosi, and Pete Bil.
In his immediate family John was predeceased by his daughter Marilyn Shuflada, son in law Larry Derkson and three great grandchildren in infancy, Emma Martinez, and Caleb and Connor Vanderveen.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years Grace, His children Rick and Bonnie Vanderveen, their children Megan Vandeveen and Laura and Danny Kulyk, grandchildren Alizabeth and William, Linda and Sean Meloney, her children Dana and David Martinez, grandchildren Hudson and Leo, and Jason and Mary Derkson, Jim and Sue Vanderveen, their children Jacqueline and Henry Benerd, grandchildren Chidi, Amara and Adaeze, Matthew and Amy Vanderveen, grandchildren Everleigh and Brock, Nick and Savanna Vanderveen, grandson Colton, Terry Shuflada(Lolita), and children Josh(Alta)Shuflada, Alta’s children Daja, Stryker, and Amara, and Brett Shuflada, Stephan Shuflada, and Ben (Hayley) Shuflada, and John and Angela Vanderveen and their children Joyce Vanderveen and Chelsea and Adam Emms, grandchildren Quinn, Liam and Jaxson, and Judie Vanderveen and Joe Bolo and grand children Joey, Jaxson, Aiden, Mia, Eva, and Ray.
He is also survived by his sister Ann Poelstra, sister-in law Liz Vanderveen, his brother Gerban and Sandra Vanderveen, his sister Theresa and John Van Egdam, and his baby sister Annette Allen (Nettie). Surviving on Grace’s side Margret Bil, Sally and Jake Renkama, Pam Bil, Leo and Ann Bil, Harry and Jeanette Bil, Gary and Joan Bil, Donna Bil, and Mom’s youngest sister Ann Bil. There also are many nieces and nephews and their children on both sides surviving.
John’s Funeral Service will take place at Bethel Pentecostal Church in Edson, Alberta, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 2:00 in the afternoon, with Pastor Bryan Walter officiating.
