John’s Obituary
GREENLAW, John Seth “Johnny” ~ of Paradise, Annapolis Co., NS, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on August 13, 2023, at the age of 69.
Johnny was many things – strong, loyal, and dedicated, to name a few – but above all, he was a family man with a huge heart. Johnny met his beloved wife of 45 years, Elizabeth “Elska” (Postma), in 1977 while she was visiting her brother who had emigrated to Nova Scotia from Holland. After falling in love with Johnny, Elska quickly followed in her brother’s footsteps, and together, they raised three children, Elizabeth “Suzanne” Greenlaw of Middleton, NS, Peter John (Amarea) Greenlaw of Halifax, NS, and Frank William Greenlaw of Halifax, NS. Johnny became “Granddad” to Hunter in 2013 and again to Abby in 2016. He loved his children and grandchildren more than anything, and he devoted his life to making sure his family was happy and cared for. His pride in his family was evident, and he was happiest when all the family was gathered in his home – playing games, watching sports or Hallmark movies, going on outdoor adventures, and eating Elska’s delicious home cooking (after doing a little work around the property, of course!)
Johnny was hardworking, starting his own construction business in 1978. Greenlaw Construction built and renovated many homes throughout the Annapolis Valley and elsewhere in Nova Scotia. Johnny always went above and beyond, and while his thoroughness and expertise helped his business soar, his friendliness, likability, quick wit, kind heart, and thoughtfulness is what made many of his customers call him friend. Johnny was also a close friend and mentor to many of the people who worked for him and with him over the years, always seeing the best in his workers and helping them to become better versions of themselves.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Johnny is survived by his sisters, Janet McCoy, Ruth Greenlaw, Barbara (David Dunn) Greenlaw, and Eva (Ralph) Ratzburg, all of Vancouver, BC, his sister-in-law, Sharon Greenlaw of Dartmouth, NS, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members across Canada and in Holland who were all important to him and close to his heart. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert Roy Greenlaw of Middleton, NS and Elizabeth Anita (Himmelman) Greenlaw of LaHave, NS; and his brother, William “Bill” Albert Greenlaw of Dartmouth, NS.
Johnny’s family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the incredible team of nurses and doctors at both the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, NS and the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Middleton, NS for their incredible care during the last weeks of Johnny’s life, as well as his team of specialists in Halifax, NS, who cared for him during his battle with lymphoma over the past couple of years.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m., on Saturday, August 19, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., toll free 1-855-825-3448. Rev. Eugene Foster officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment will be in Fundy View Cemetery, Port Lorne, at a later date. The family wants this occasion to be a true celebration of Johnny’s incredible life and invites those attending to dress in whatever makes you most comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Diabetes Canada. On-line guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
