John Robert Almond passed away peacefully on the evening of October 16, 2023 at Welland General Hospital, after 6 weeks of fighting non-stop to get well and return home to his family. Beloved husband of Linda (Palmer) and cherished father of Cody Palmer-Almond, daughter-in-law Kate, and grandson Gibson. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Mary Almond, sister Dorothy, and brother Albert. He has rejoined his favourite drinking buddy Mother-in-law Leta Palmer. He will be remembered fondly as Uncle John by countless children that came to know him through the family home daycare, especially Cody’s “brothers” Juri and Daniel Heidebrecht. John’s presence on his Lafayette neighbourhood porch will be greatly missed, and all his special memories with his Lafayette family will live on forever. His spirit and many parts of his personality are already present in his first and only Grandson Gibson John, who never failed to put a smile on his Grandfather’s face during his time away from home. John was a proud member of the Canadian railway profession for 37 years working for CN, GO, and Via. His love of trains lived on well beyond his early retirement in 2003. The family would like to say a special thank you to all the healthcare workers involved in John’s care the past 6 months, both at home and during his hospital stays in St. Catharines and Welland. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a special bursary fund with the Education Foundation of Niagara to support a graduating Laura Secord Arts student each school year.
