John’s family wish to express their deep gratitude for the numerous years and special moments they shared together. He passed away peacefully at home with his wife and children by his side on July 31, 2024.
In his retirement years, John enjoyed his time at home in his yard bird-watching with his wife, children, grandchildren and their furry friends: Vinnie, Jacques and Zoey. In recent years, he, Linda and their grand-children annually turned their family room into a makeshift greenhouse in preparation for spring planting. John also enjoyed his long walks, meandering through the neighborhood chatting with neighbours.
After his graduation from Wayne State University, John began his career as a teacher in London England followed by a few years at St. Clair College upon his return home to Windsor. His career with the province of Ontario began with the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and Ministries of- Culture and Recreation; Citizenship and Culture; Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and full circle back to the Ministry of Culture and Recreation, during which time he met Linda (aka Lucie).
During his career with government, John enjoyed working with community groups. His cooperative efforts with other dedicated and talented people resulted in the creation of community initiatives and organizations such as the Arts Council Windsor and Region, the Multicultural Council of Windsor, Carrousel of the Nations, and Challenge Cup.
John will forever be missed by his wife Linda (née Renaud), and their children: Jason and Elisa Fisher; Sarah Fisher; Lena and Steven Szakaly; Justin and Vanessa Paquette and, last but not least, their treasured grand-children: Théodore, Benjamin and Julien Paquette; Rivka and Pearl Szakaly, and, Sophia Simurda.
John was predeceased by his parents George and Mary-Alma Fisher (née McCarthy), and his mother and father-in-law, Stanley and Lucie Renaud. He will be mourned by siblings Bill (late Anna) Fisher and Mary Margaret (late Richard) Orczyk, and brothers and sisters-in-law: Lise and Brent; Louise (late Mike); Carole and Henry, and, Paul and Pam. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to St. Elizabeth nurse Amanda; University Hospital of London, Dr. Hudson; Dr. Nasser and staff at the Windsor Cancer Centre; medical staff at Met Hospital; Dr. Cargill and staff from Hospice of Windsor, EMS staff and family, friends and neighbours for their support and kindness.
In accordance with John’s wishes, a private family celebration of his life will be held following his cremation. Trees will be planted in John’s memory. If you so desire, donations can be made to the Hospice of Windsor in memory of John.
