Passed away peacefully at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at age 84. Beloved husband of the late Doreen (nee McFarlane) Whyte. Loved father of James (Katherine), Douglas (Dale), Robert (Tina) and Nancy (Guy). Cherished grandfather of Ryan, William (Kimberly), Matthew (Jillian), Leslie (Eddy), Carter (Kimberly), Austin (Alexa), Eric, Amber, Skyler, Melanie and great-grandfather of Georgia, Everett, Otto and Milena. Dear brother of Nanette (Don Hysert) and brother-in-law of Sharon (late George Weir). John is lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
John was born in Salsburg, Scotland on February 15, 1939. He emigrated with his parents, William and Agnes, and sister Nanette to Hamilton, Ont. at age 14 in pursuit of a better life.
Soon after leaving school, John embarked on an apprenticeship and worked as an electrician for almost 50 years, beginning in construction and later at United Carr Fasteners and TRW Canada.
John married Doreen McFarlane in 1959. They had four children and were married 52 years, until her passing in 2011.
John was a founding member of the Optimist Club of East Hamilton and its secretary-treasurer for many years.
John loved the outdoors. He took pleasure in canoeing, camping, and fishing, as well as puttering in the garden with Doreen. He enjoyed living in the country with Doug and Dale in his later years… where he passed time visiting the chickens, playing the harmonica and riding his three wheeled bike.
John loved to tell a joke, and could recite Robbie Burns poetry learned in his Scottish boyhood from memory. He had inexplicable passions for both country music and cheering on the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
John recommitted his life as a believer in Jesus while attending Selkirk Christian Chapel as a member from 2012 onward. He moved to Grassie ON, in 2019 moving his church affiliation to St. Ann’s Community Church where he attended faithfully.
A Private Family Service was held at STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, 11 Mountain Street, GRIMSBY (905-945-2755) followed by burial at Woodland Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions to St. Ann’s Community Church (donatetostanns@gmail.com) would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
