John Robert Lees, Jr.
John died peacefully in the Welland Hospital of respiratory failure on September 17, 2023 at the age of 63. John had lived in Port Colborne since 2010, and at Repei Place since 2016.
John was born in Niagara Falls on May 12, 1960 to parents John and Helen Lees and big brother Jim. He attended Greendale Public School, Westlane Secondary School and graduated from Stamford Collegiate. John also took piano lessons for many years, achieving a grade 12 level from the Royal Conservatory. After he converted to Judaism in his twenties, he became functionally fluent in Hebrew, but still loved Christmas and would scrimp and save to buy people presents and place Santa decorations beside the menorahs on his piano.
John loved 1970’s pop culture, driving his motorized wheelchair way too fast (apparently, he was warned by the police a few times to be more careful) and caring for his beloved cat Buddy. John had a lot of health challenges, but most of the people he knew would describe him as extremely funny and considerate of others.
John was predeceased by his parents and his favourite Aunt Val and Uncle Paul. Left to remember him is brother Jim, sister-in-law Cathy and niece Madeline in Thunder Bay; nephew Kevin in Calgary and; niece Emma and great-nieces Jilian and Natalie of The Pas, Manitoba.
A note of thanks is extended to the wonderful staff at Bridges Community Health Centre, all of whom knew John as a person and treated him with respect and dignity. A special thanks to Dr. St. Hilaire who patiently and skillfully treated John’s complex medical needs and quarterbacked referrals to specialists over the years and to; Community Worker Judy Cassan who was always there to provide invaluable support and guidance so that John lived the highest possible quality of life.
Thanks as well to the trustees and staff at Port Cares, the kind folks at Boggio Pharmacy and to the many PSWs who provided essential support over the years. John considered many within this caring community as his friends, and spoke very highly of you.
And to the staff and residents of Gateway Residential and Community Support Services, particularly Martha Carpentier-Gibson (and Russell Boutilier before her) who always went the extra mile and looked out for John’s wellbeing.
Finally to Dr. Powell and Nurse Sean Kennedy at the Welland Hospital for your kindness and compassion during John’s final hours.
Davidson Funeral Home, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne, arranged for John’s cremation. A celebration of life will happen at 12:00 on October 25th, 2023 at 569 King Street.
