It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Lawrence Olmsted on May 3rd, 2024. John was in his 82nd year and leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Donelda; son Garth (Vivian); daughter Paige (Mike), and granddaughter Wren.
John was a lifelong Hamiltonian, attending Hill Park Secondary School, Wilfrid Laurier University (then Waterloo Lutheran) and teaching at Southmount Secondary and Scott Park. He enjoyed both playing and watching sports, especially racket sports and basketball, which he played, coached, and was a constant presence at his kids’ many games and matches. John was a committed Raptors fan from day 1 and through many lean seasons, delighting in their 2019 championship run.
He spent over 50 summers at Cedar Springs Community Club, raising kids, playing golf and tennis, and in later years spending time with his family, reading copiously, enjoying good food and wine, and appreciating its tranquil environment.
An avid birder, John was a member of the Hamilton Naturalists Club for over 60 years. His passion for birds and travel took him to all 7 continents and over 100 countries, often in remote places and precarious situations. He believed strongly in the value of learning through experience, though this adventurous streak that led to seeing over 5000 bird species contrasted with his gentle demeanor and preference to lead a quiet life.
As per his wishes, there will not be a memorial service, but donations to the Hamilton Naturalists Club or the Royal Botanical Gardens are welcomed in his memory. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Willowgrove Nursing Home in Ancaster for their considerate care in John’s final months.
