John Joseph “Squirrel” MacNeil
We, the family of John Joseph “Squirrel” MacNeil, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born September 6, 1946, in Sydney, he was a son of the late John “Dan C.” and Millie (Lappin) MacNeil.
John was an electrician by trade and a member of IBEW Local 1852. He was an advocate for the Injured Workers Association. John, affectionately known as Papa, lived for his adventures with his granddaughter, Ollie. They had a bond like no other. John enjoyed spending time puttering in the shed, creating innovations, spending time with his family, sharing stories and visiting “Down Home” the Pier. He had a unique wisdom to him and was an avid reader. He had a passion for cooking and was quite the dancer in his day.
John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Theresa (Collier); daughters, Sherri-Lynn (Craig) MacDonald, Westmount and Lynzee MacNeil, Sydney River; beloved Papa to Gracie Anne “Ollie” MacDonald; sisters, Colleen (Blick) Campbell, Cole Harbour; brother, Bill (Linda), Bedford; sister-in-law, Valerie MacNeil, Sydney; brother-in-law, Sham MacDougall, Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sisters, Joan MacDougall and Margie (Bud) Kozera and brother, Dan C. MacNeil.
A special thank you to Dr. Glen Worth and Dr. Glenn Gracie for their care over the years.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys on Tuesday, September 24th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. The service can be viewed live by visiting the Sydney Memorial Chapel Facebook page.
