It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce that John (Jack) Hamilton Robertson, born on July 10, 1928, in Cumberland BC, passed away on April 8, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of service to his community and a lifetime of fond memories for his loved ones. He was 94 years old.
Jack was married to his beloved first wife Joan Tilbe in 1954, and together they raised two sons, Reid and Todd. Sadly, Joan passed away in 1983. Jack found love again and married Lois King (nee Hammell) in August 1990, with whom he shared many happy years together.
Jack will be deeply missed by his wife Lois, sons Reid (Penny) and Todd (Brenda), stepchildren Colleen Rehor (Peter) and Tim King, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all those that new him. He was predeceased by his parents John and Christina Robertson, his sister Helen, and his grandson Tyler.
Jack’s dedication to his community was evident throughout his life. He served 17 years in the RC Army Reserve, and he was a volunteer firefighter with the Cumberland Fire Department and eventually became the Fire Chief, serving with distinction. Jack sat on multiple boards, including the Cumberland Hospital Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and was active for many years in the Kinsman and Masonic affiliations, further demonstrating his commitment to serving his community. Jack was also a devoted member of the Cumberland Legion.
For many years, Jack was the owner-manager of the Imperial Service Station in Cumberland, where he served his customers with dedication and professionalism.
Even after his retirement, Jack continued his service to the community. He drove the Masonic cancer van to Victoria frequently, helping those in need, and volunteered as a cameraman at Shaw TV. Jack loved to ride his motorbike, camp in his RV and travel and explore new places. He enjoyed good food, wine and his favourite beer (Sleeman Honey Brown Lager), but above all he was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends, sharing stories and laughter.
Jack will be missed dearly by all who knew him. His humour, generosity, and dedication to his family and community will be remembered as a true testament to his character.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at the Cumberland Fire Department on June 17, 2023, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or YANA Foundation in Jack’s honor.
