Remembering Jack Coulter
John «Jack» F. Coulter
1929 ~ 2023
The loving family of John F. Coulter of Tatamagouche are sad to announce his passing in the early hours of Monday September 4th, 2023 in the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, N.S.
Born in Waltham, Massachusetts on November 1st, 1929, he was proud to have lived well into his 94th year, often boasting that he was the longest living male in the history of the Coulter family.
He leaves behind his daughters, his son and sons-in-law, Linda and David Turner of Guelph ON, Susan of Halifax and Edward Hoagland of Aberdeen, New Jersey, Patricia of Halifax, and Michael of Alberta. Also left to mourn are his beloved sister, Elizabeth Shearer and husband, Ken of Stony Plain, Alberta; honourary son, Robert Langille and wife, Shirley of Tatamagouche, and sister-in-law Patricia Langille of Cornwall, ON. He also leaves behind his many adoring grandchildren, Rosalynd Coulter Semple and Dwayne Semple, of Debert, Peter and Karen Turner, of Greenfield, Joel Davis and Linzee MacKenzie, and Lindsay-Bea Davis, of Halifax, Alison & Miles Rhynas of Victoria BC, Susan Murray of Vancouver, BC, Margot Murray and John Murray of Halifax. He felt so very fortunate to have eight great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, all who kept in close touch with “Papa Jack”. His many nieces and nephews were a source of immense pride; he was always interested and pleased to hear news of their lives from far and wide.
He was sadly predeceased by Marjorie, his true love and wife of 69 years, sons-in-law Colin Millward and Scott Murray; his parents, Hanson and Laura Coulter, brother, Charles; sisters Evelyn Blenkhorn and Lauretta (Williams) Pettis; brothers-in-law, Ronald and John Langille. John “Jack” was a man of integrity and duty for his family, church and community, giving the very best of himself tirelessly for the entire span of his life. He was a village merchant from a very young age, proudly putting out his shingle at 17, taking his place in the ebb and flow of village life. This evolved over the years into ownership of Coulter’s Red and White, and further, Coulter’s Funeral Home and Ambulance Service, this being the most fulfilling period of his career, as he felt deeply the privilege of caring for his community in times of need. He proudly made this a family enterprise, bringing in his daughter Linda and future grandson-in-law Dwayne to work side by side for many years. He was most recently described as “a good citizen” which is evidenced by his being a member of the United Church of Canada, serving at Sharon United as choir member for 45 years, Elder, Choir President, Board of Stewards, and Chairman of the Bequest Committee. He was also Past Master of the Masonic Lodge of Tatamagouche, Member of the Tatamagouche Fire Department, Past Chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Committee, Past Chairman of the Area Development Association, Past Chairman of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, and past member of the Nova Scotia Hospital Association Board of Directors. He was also a man of the arts, having considerable sketching ability which was so cleverly applied to chronicle family and community comings and goings. His place in the tenor section of the choir was his most comfortable spot, and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to be formally trained. This led to many years of recitals, operettas, and countless solo requests for the weddings and funerals of his beloved community members. He would sing at every opportunity and, inspired by his eldest daughter, drew in the teenagers of the village for Sunday afternoon rehearsals for the group he called “The Happy Wanderers”. Not to be left behind, his younger daughters and their friends were delighted with the formation of “The Tag-alongs”. He and Marjorie were so pleased in their retirement to travel extensively, and to have the luxury of time to enjoy their growing family. His children and grandchildren, whom he considered his most treasured accomplishment, had the unmeasurable benefit for many long years, of his unwavering love and support, gentle wit and wisdom, and legacy of a life well lived. He will be forever missed. The family wish to thank the staff at the Aberdeen Hospital who provided such compassionate and respectful care to this “man of substance” who had reached the end of his days. We are most grateful.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche, from which cremation has taken place. It was the intention of Jack and Marj to have a combined celebration of life as they wished to be remembered at this time just as they had lived as one. This is scheduled to take place at 2-4pm on Friday, September 8th, 2023 at Coulter’s Funeral Home, 48 Riverside Drive, Tatamagouche, NS, with private family committal to follow at Lockerby Memorial Cemetery. Donations may be made to Lockerby Memorial Cemetery or charity of one’s choice.
