Obituary
Dr. Grahame Owen
(John Grahame Hughes Owen)
July 21, 1928 – December 20, 2022
Grahame passed away at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on December 20, 2022. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Caro. He was a devoted father to his daughters Sian and Louise (John- predeceased) and Taid to Owen (Danielle), Spencer and Christopher.
Born in Maesteg Wales, he grew spending summer vacations initially farming in mid Wales. Later he was an apprentice in a service station learning how to service the internal combustion engine. He left school (Epsom College) in 1945 and immediately volunteered for the army. Three months after induction into the army he succumbed to tuberculosis and spent 20 months recovering in an open air sanitorium. It was here he developed a love for building models – ship models to be specific. The hours dedicated during his time in the sanitorium and after were a labour of a love for all things Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1949, he entered the London Hospital Medical College where he achieved his lifelong ambition of becoming a doctor.
He immigrated to Canada in 1959 and opened his practice in Family Medicine and joined the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on staff. Every day was a labour of love. He served his patients, the hospital, and the community for over 43 years, 22 of these years he was also a coroner.
He had a love of science and served on countless committees locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. He loved to mentor others and teach and lecture about the latest medical theories and advances. He had many accomplishments in his career. Some of the highlights include, Family Physician of the Year, President of the Ontario Chapter, The College of Family Physicians of Canada, Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, Founding Chairman of the Asthma Education Centre, Founding Chairman and Medical Advisor for The Diabetes Centre, which is named after him. After retiring from Family Medicine, he managed in-patient and out-patient wound care. Medicine and his patients were his passion.
On a personal note, he loved the sand and the sea, model building, tennis, painting and being with family.
Proud Welshman, devoted husband, father and Taid, dedicated physician. A life well lived!
