John Gordon “Gordie” MacDonald
Sydney
We, the family of John Gordon MacDonald, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, December 8, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born May 10, 1932, in Sydney, he was the son of the late George and Jean (Bryson) MacDonald.
Gordie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice (Richardson); daughter, Wendy (Rod) March, Mount Pearl, NL; son, John, Bedford; granddaughter, Ava Morgan Baker; sisters-in-law, Beverly Richardson (Dan-Neil MacDonald) and Sandra Richardson; niece, Dale MacLennan; nephews, Michael Whelan, Stephen (Debbie) Whalen, Scott Richardson, Dean Richardson and Adam (Ashley)Richardson; and great-nieces, Meghan Salter and Ria Salter.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Georgie MacLennan and Barbara Campbell; parents-in-law, George and Winnifred Richardson; brothers-in-law, Paul Richardson, William MacLennan and James Campbell; sister-in-law, Irene Whelan; niece, Donna Salter; and best friend, Aubrey Dawson.
Gordie was very active all of his life – well into his 80’s – he could be seen streaking through Sydney, Blackett’s Lake, Coxheath , Glace Bay Highway – a flash of green on his bike – sharing his love of biking with his son, John, did a brief period of running – gravity was not in his favour, so he dropped that activity, time at the gym, walked every single day with his trusted Mandy meeting all of her friends on the route and as soon as the ice was on the rinks – would spend four days a week skating. Gordie and Aubrey raced boats together in the 60s on the Mira River at the Mira River Boat Club – taking home many awards through the years in his beloved Big Bernie which he built. He carried his boat building expertise onto building a cabin cruiser and then decided to build a kayak in the basement – yes it did make it out of the basement. He had a deep love of old cars – buying up Car Magazines and attending any car show in the area he could find. Ladders were not his friend – from spilling paint (Bernie got a new carpet out of that one) to actually falling off them, so the ladders were removed from his access. With regards to painting – he has apparently passed on his painting “skills” to his daughter.
He and Bernie travelled to Scotland twice – first time he got to see where his family originated from in the Hebrides and unfortunately – being a bagpiper for many years – heard the worst played bagpipes ever – you could see him cringe and knew he just wanted to go take the pipes and show how they were supposed to be played. He and Aubrey went to New York in their younger years. He later returned with Bernie and Wendy and Rod for their 55th anniversary – finding all the best dessert places in NYC – he had a bit of a sweet tooth.
Gordie started his career at Canada Packers right from high school. He moved on to Seaboard Power Plant (NS Power) in Glace Bay before transitioning to the Gas Turbine Site at Victoria Junction also with NS Power. He was trained on them by Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut. When he retired, he would take cars to various car dealers within the Maritimes, as he loved driving.
Gordie was a member of the Grand Lodge for many years – achieving the role of Grand Master. He was a Scout Master and escorted his troop to CJ81 to Banff, AB. Gordie loved being part of a couple of choirs – traveling around the island with different groups. Action movies, Murder She Wrote and Blue Bloods were some of his favourite things to watch on TV.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the ICU at Cape Breton Regional Hospital who helped make his passing as peaceful as possible.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be no funeral service at this time. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
