Obituary for
John Douglas «Doug» Haig
May 21, 1934 – May 19, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Haig, who died on May 19th, just two days shy of his 90th birthday, and only five months before his wife of 64 years, Joan. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Judy; son-in-law, Geoff; sister, Janice Haig; brother-in-law, Steven Aitken; sister-in-law, Lillian; brother-in-law, Don, and their families.
Doug was born and raised in Lethbridge, to Dr. Willard and Mae Haig. He attended university in Montreal at McGill, then at the University of Alberta, and went on to work as a drafting engineer for the Government of Alberta for most of his career. He met his wife Joan while attending the University of Alberta.
Doug was full of life and vitality which was endearing to all who knew him. He was passionate in all that he loved, and not only inspired Joan and Judy, but anyone who met him. He had a zest for life that was infectious, and a delightful wry sense of humor. An avid cyclist, he eschewed the use of the automobile even in the winter, riding his bike to work over the High Level Bridge even on the coldest days. In the 1970’s this was just not the norm, so many thought him extreme (perhaps crazy?), but it turns out he was just ahead of his time. He lived by his values, and his commitment to nature and the environment was iconoclastic at that time. Anything he did, cycling, skiing, climbing mountains, walking the dog in the river valley, he relished with his whole self, his heart and soul. This was true of his love of music too. Jazz, classical, old-time country… many happy hours were spent listening to his favourite albums in the living room, overlooking the ravine with a beloved dog nearby, so much the better if he could share a new CD with family or friends. He and Joan loved to travel and had many adventures together. They took many trips and had many, often very funny stories to share. Joan was always very proud that she could keep up with him on the trail or on her bicycle.
Doug was stricken with Alzheimer’s and spent his final years at the Touchmark seniors’ residence. It was a painful and heartbreaking time for him, his wife, and daughter who love him so dearly. We are very grateful to the staff at Touchmark for the loving and dignified care they gave Doug in his final years.
Doug is dearly missed by all who loved him, and we will always hold him close in our hearts.
A Memorial Service for both Doug and Joan will be held Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to an animal rescue charity of your choosing.
