John «David» Joseph Fleming
1949-2024
With broken hearts, we announce the death of our father John
‘David’ Joseph Fleming on July 16, 2024 following
a short yet courageous battle with brain cancer. Cherished husband to
Valerie (Davies) for 54 years. Best dad to Chris (Tonya), Kymberley
(Jeff), and Corey (Melinda). Bestest grampy to Miah, Caiden, Avery,
Emmerly, Alicia (the Bug), Tanner, Shaye, Lachlan, and Cian.
David was born November 16, 1949 to Dermot
and Anna (Dalton) in Summerside. He will be sadly missed by his sister
Joyce (Callbeck) and brother Tim (Heather), sisters-in-law Donna
Davies, Molly Thomas, Lynne Dirani-Davies and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his infant son, Curtis, sister Anne Smith,
mother-in-law Frances Davies (Morrrison), father-in-law John Davies,
Brothers-in-law Edmund (Duck) Sherren, Ralph Callbeck, Fred Smith,
Jack Davies, Wayne Davies and granddaughter Courtney.
David spent his early years in Summerside and later
lived in his mothers’s birthplace of Seacow Pond and later
grew up in Charlottetown. He met Valerie at the Rollaway in 1968. They
later married in Toronto. He played hockey, softball, golf, darts, and
enjoyed drag racing. He worked as a correctional officer at Sleepy
Hollow and with PEI Dept of Transportation until his retirement in
2022. He was a real jokester and loved to make people laugh. Even up
until this final moments with us, he was still laughing at his own
jokes and one-liners. He was known for his generosity and never let
his kids/grandkids leave the house without a ‘few
bucks’ in their pocket. The day he was diagnosed, his first
words were ‘Its better to be me than a little
child’. That statement sums up who he truly was.
We would like to give heartfelt thanks to the many
friends and family who supported dad during his journey after his
diagnosis, Kirby and Doris Wakelin, Kirk Morrison, Steve Band, Dave
Bell (and family), Tracey Smith, Dr. Stewart, Dr. Gallant, Dr.
Saunders, the amazing staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
(nutritional services (Amanda and Angela) ER, Units 3&8)
Island EMS, and Hennessy Funeral Home.
Resting
at Hennessy Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home. Visiting hours
Sunday, July 21 from 1-4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St.
Dunstan’s Basilica on Monday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m.
Interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown.
