John’s Obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of John C. MacKay of Plymouth, Pictou Co., announces his passing on December 13, 2022, in Valley View Villa, Riverton, just four months shy of his 100th birthday.
John was born on April 10, 1923 on Tatamagouche Mountain. His father died when he was only seven years of age. He was raised on the farm by his mother and brother for the remainder of his young life, working in local sawmills and helping neighbours with many building projects as was common on the mountain. He met his future wife, Eleanor Bailey of nearby Balmoral Mills, while driving the feeder bus. They were married in 1953 and stayed on the farm where John studied carpentry, electrical and electronics skills, travelling throughout Colchester, Cumberland and Pictou counties performing radio and TV repair service on his own. When Clairtone Industries opened in Stellarton in the mid-1960s he finally left the farm and moved his wife and six children to a home in Lower Plymouth. When Clairtone closed, he went on to work for MacGregor Bedding as an electrician tradesman, moving finally to Ferguson Industries at Pictou Shipyards where he eventually retired. In the years prior to his retirement, he caught the genealogy bug and what started with his own family tree research resulted in extensive travel and collection of cemeteries, census, newspaper obits and vital statistics for the four Northumberland Shore counties. His years of research have been shared with genealogy researchers from all over in the form of letters, phone calls and drop-in visits. His collections have supplied local library research desks with catalogs for other family tree seekers. He travelled twice to Scotland, the land of his forefathers in the mid-1980s, visiting the cemetery of his great grandmother, inspiring him to continue his own family research. His family will remember with a smile and a bit of sadness those times when his eagerness to share his research during a “short” visit resulted in extensive pouring over records from his vast library. John was known by all as a meticulous man who rarely took shortcuts in anything that compromised the result. That was true of his creations in both his working life and his hobbies. He was a long time member of the IOOF Lodge, a former piper in the 1st Battalion NSH, Square Dancer, Pictou County Genealogical Society member and Pictou County Oldtime Fiddlers.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eleanor (Bailey) MacKay; six children, Loretta (Murray) Levy, Ron (Shirley Smith), Lorraine (Blair) Levy, Gladys (Glenn) DeYoung, Randy (Leanne), and Robert (Kathy Rogers); ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Robert MacKay and Lillie (Popp), brother Andrew, sister Margaret (Cunningham) (Dufresne), and one son George in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside Committal Service will be held June 17 at 11am in The Falls Cemetery. Mr. Cory Lunn officiating. Donations may be made in John’s name to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche, where online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.mmcfunerals.com
