Obituary
Burchell, John Wilfred – Brule (1945-2023) Died peacefully on the evening of August 6 with daughter, Shannon, by his side at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. He was the second of three children born to Wilfred and Helen (MacLeod) Burchell. Born in Truro and raised in Sydney, John graduated from Dalhousie University and had a successful and rewarding career in global travel and tourism – spending many years abroad living in Germany, Mexico, and Japan with his wife Karen and children on overseas postings. During retirement in Brule, N.S., he continued to pursue his lifelong passion for travel, as well as collecting and preserving historical and military artifacts. He spent summers at his family cottage in Smith Cove, Brule where he enjoyed gardening and time with family and friends. Married in 1971, he is survived by his son, Christopher (Melanie), Calgary; daughter, Shannon (Elijah) Lloy, Antigonish; grandchildren: Alexandra, Narayana, Marek, Aran; sister, Grace Chaban, Pictou; sisters-in-law: Linda (Hugh) Brown, Amherst; Noreen (Yvon) Lavalee, Montreal; Jane van de Sande, Truro; nieces, nephews, cousins and an extended circle of many friends across the globe. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, George Burchell; brothers-in- law: Marinus van de Sande and Bill Chaban. Special thanks to Dr. Rob Bush, nurses and staff of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche, as well as the doctors and staff of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Cremation has taken place with arrangements being entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. There will be no visitation or memorial service. A gathering in his memory will be arranged at a future date. Interment of ashes will follow at the Lockerby Memorial Cemetery, Tatamagouche. No flowers by request. Donations may be made in John’s name to either the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Foundation.
