John «Bill» McNeil
1935-2022
John William (Bill) McNeil, of Arthurette, NB passed away due to covid
health related complications at the Victoria Glen Manor in
Perth-Andover, NB on October 19, 2022. Bill was born May 18, 1935, in
McKay’s Corner, ON to William Colin Francis McNeil of Sydney
Mines, NS and Madelyn Josephine Giberson of Arthurette, NB. Bill is
survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Iris Phyllis Cooper of Odell
NB; and his children; Cheryl Ann Sadler (John) of Perth-Andover, NB,
Shelley Ashford (David) of Perth-Andover, NB, Stanley McNeil (Ruby
Parsons) of Fredericton NB, Christopher McNeil (Colleen McCarthy) of
Winnipeg MB, and Susan McNeil (Kevin Graber) of Surrey, BC; and nephew
Luke Cooper (Tammy Gamblin) of Odell NB; 12 grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren scattered across Canada, the USA, the UK and
China. Bill was predeceased by his father in 1987, his mother in 1990,
and his sister Brenda McNeil in 2008.
As a young man, Bill was very involved in sports, having played on the
Tobique Valley High School boys basketball team, the Arthurette
men’s baseball team and the Arthurette men’s hockey team.
In his late twenties he took up golf, becoming an avid golfer and
member of the Plaster Rock Golf Club for more than 50 years, during
which time he was a club champion (1970). He was also a past member of
the Perth-Andover Minor Hockey Association, coaching his sons and
other boys from Arthurette.
On November 12, 1954, he married the love of his life and they moved
to Georgetown, ON but returned to the Tobique in the summer of 1957.
They assumed the operation of a general store in Arthurette that had
been owned and operated for the previous 40 years by his great-uncle
and great-aunt (Bruce and Florence Wright). In 1968, they purchased
Raymond W. Sisson’s General Store across the railroad tracks
from their existing business, and later incorporated the business as
Arthurette General Store Limited. In 1994, they relocated their
business to a newly built convenience store in Red Rapids, NB. This
store remains in the family, and is now owned and operated by his
daughter Shelley and his son in-law David Ashford.
Throughout his life, Bill was very involved in the community and his
church. He was a long-time warden of the St. Helen’s Anglican
Church in Licford, NB and a member of the vestry of the Anglican
Parish of the Tobique. He was a past member of the District 31 School
Board in Perth-Andover, NB; the Board of Directors for Hotel Dieu St.
Joseph Hospital in Perth-Andover, NB; and the executive of the Plaster
Rock Golf Club. He was also a great supporter of numerous charitable
organizations, especially those providing aid to children in
developing countries.
Bill was the last surviving charter member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch 85 in Arthurette. He was an enthusiastic card player;
participating in the Legion’s annual card tournaments for many
years.
Bill was a big proponent of the value of obtaining a post-secondary
education, and was very proud of the academic and professional
achievements of his children and grandchildren. Having lived in the
Arthurette area for most of his life, and having operated a business
in the community for years, he was viewed by many to be the local
historian. He has had people from across Canada and from beyond, reach
out
to him for information about the area and the families that resided
there; often by those looking to find their genealogical roots. He had
a great sense of humour and no matter how dire a situation may have
been, he could find a funny side to almost any state of affairs. He
will be missed by all that knew him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Perth-Andover
Baptist Church, 194 Barrett Street, Perth-Andover, NB, on Saturday,
July 29th, 2023, at 2:00 pm. There will be a luncheon in the Church
Hall following the Service, and the interment will take place
afterward at the St. Machutus Cemetery in Arthurette, NB.
The family would like to thank Dr. Barry Wecker, the staff at the
Hotel Dieu St. Joseph Hospital, and the staff at the Victoria Glen
Manor that cared so deeply and provided such excellent care to Dad
during his life journey. We will be forever grateful.
