John Barry Sheehan
January 5, 2024

SHEEHAN, BARRY
It is with great sadness and profound love that the family of John “Barry” Sheehan announce his passing on January 5th, 2024, at the Osgoode Care Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.
He is survived by his wife Daphne, daughters Amy-Beth (Shaun) and Katelyn (Michel), grandchildren Edward, Évangéline, Rory, Marielle, and Connor; siblings Paula Roe (Gene), Ray and Joe and life-long friends Roger Bryson and Dennis Hall. Barry is predeceased by his beloved twin sister Mary Beth, his nephew Ryan, parents Lucy and John Barry.
Barry and his twin sister, Mary Beth, were born on April 19, 1942 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to their parents Lucy and John Barry Sheehan. Barry spent his childhood in his beloved hometown of St. George, New Brunswick. In his early 20s, he moved to Montreal where he worked for CN Rail and Bell Canada. In 1967, Barry brought his little sister and brother to Expo 67— a cherished memory for Barry.
Later, Barry returned to New Brunswick, settling down in Saint John, where he met his wife Daphne (Brown) and they raised their two daughters, Amy-Beth and Katelyn Anne.
It was in Saint John where Barry was proud to have worked as an electrician for the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project at the Saint John Shipyard—including on the HMCS Fredericton and Charlottetown among other ships. When the Shipyard closed, Barry became a member of IBEW Local 502 where he met many great friends and upon retirement, enjoyed many wonderful outings as a member of IBEW Retirees Club. During his career as an electrician, Barry also worked in the United States mainly in New England.
An avid outdoorsman, Barry was a dedicated downhill skier, having skied every major mountain in New England and was a regular at local hill, Poley Mountain where he was also a member of the Saint John Ski Club in the 1970s. Canoeing, hiking, and biking were also among his passions. Barry spent many summers paddling along the Saint John River in his prized Old Town canoe with Daphne, his daughters, and their dog. As Barry’s health declined in later years, he continued to stay active. Through sheer will and determination Barry never let his health slow him down.
Barry’s zest for adventure and the great outdoors brought him to many beautiful places and those trips were such a sense of pride for him. He made sure his daughters knew about the beauty of Lake Utopia, the excitement of watching the Red Sox at Fenway Park and the feeling of freedom skiing down one of the many mountains in New England. While he travelled to far away destinations like Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal, it was the Maritimes and New England that Barry cherished exploring the most.
Sports was Barry’s other passion. There was always a game on in the Sheehan home, whether it was his Red Sox or Blue Jays, endless NHL games, or CFL games (and his yearly Grey Cup bet with Roger), Barry was always on top of what was going on in the world of sports.
Barry was known as “Grampie” and wanted nothing more than to hear what his five grandkids had been up to. In his later life, Barry relocated to Ottawa, Ontario to be closer to his two daughters and grandchildren. Many wonderful memories were made with his family during his years in Ottawa.
An internment and private celebration of life will be held this summer in New Brunswick. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff at the Osgoode Care Centre for their outstanding care and love they have shown Barry in the last four years. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care Barry received at Seely’s Lodge in Grand Bay, N.B. prior to moving to Ontario.
Donations in Barry’s memory would be greatly appreciated to the Osgoode Care Centre
