McKenzie, John Allan – 86, Malagash, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023 at the Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche. Born in Malagash, he was a son of the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Haines) McKenzie. John was a heavy equipment mechanic and welder by trade. He served with the Royal Canadian Army from 1955 -1960 and was on the first peace keeping tour to Egypt. He was a member of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment and the Royal Canadian Dragoons. John worked at the Canadian Rock Salt Mine in Pugwash; had moved to Ontario and drove a truck for Harris Transport, and upon returning to Malagash went back to work at the Salt Mine. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Malagash Branch 97, and had received his seventy year pin. John is survived by his children, Monica (George) MacKenzie, Tammy (David) Rafuse, all of Malagash, Andrea Langille (Paul Kennedy), Moncton, N.B., Jim (Brenda) McKenzie, Trenton, Ont.; grandchildren, Lindsay MacKenzie (Steven Flett), Stacey (Mike) Vissers, David (Holly) Rafuse, Melissa (Paul) Robichaud, Gordon Langille (Sonia Hachey-Melanson), Rachel Langille (Jonny Williams), Jeffery Langille (Nicole Babbage), Brandon McKenzie and Dylan McKenzie; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Don (Evelyn) MacKenzie, Malagash; brother-in-law, Calvin Latta, Pugwash; several nieces and nephews, Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister Anna Watson. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m., Thursday, August 24, 2023, with a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service and the funeral service to follow, all in Mundle’s Funeral Home, Pugwash. Burial will be in the Miner’s Cemetery, Malagash, with a reception to follow in the Malagash Community Hall. Donations in memory may be made to the Willow Lodge, Miner’s Cemetery or a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Willow Lodge and Reverend Connie McNamara for the care and compassion shown to John during his stay there.
