John Albert Strasser
Albert Bridge
We, the family of Dr. John Albert Strasser, regret to announce his passing on Saturday, September 14, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born January 28, 1945, in Sydney, he was the only child of the late Gus and Lillian (Tetanish) Strasser.
John was raised in the Pier, an Honours graduate of Sydney Academy, followed by engineering degrees from St. F.X. (B.Sc.), Penn State University (M.S.), and the Technical University of Nova Scotia (Ph.D., Metallurgical Engineering). His professional career was hallmarked by serving as President of Sydney Steel (1988-1991), and President of St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario (2000-2015). He was proud of being awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) for his contributions to education and community, and his induction into the first class of the Wall of Honour at Sydney Academy (2008). However, since 2006 his most cherished role was being “Grampy”.
John is survived by his wife, Gayle; sons, Andrew (Amy), Media, PA and Kirby, Albert Bridge; and grandchildren, Leah, Andrea, and Addison; in-laws, Richard and Iris Baryluk (Richie), and Elizabeth MacDonald Moore, Sydney.
He was predeceased by his in-laws, Catherine and Gus Moore, and brother-in-law, Kirby Moore, forever more of a brother.
Akin to the metallurgy he studied, he was forged early by his Ukrainian heritage carried through by a mid-century Pier upbringing that harnessed a tireless work ethic to the service of having compassion toward everything he approached. Those who knew him best relied on having their problems solved shortly after John took paper and pen in hand, and, Columbo-style, drew some graphs with some stats to get at the big picture.
We express our heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff on 3B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for taking fantastic care of John and supporting Gayle, sharing music, laughter and tears, and serenading Dad with Out on the Mira in his final days.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Dad was an ardent supporter of youth athletics and education, therefore any contribution of money, time or encouragement to youth sports would be an appreciated way to honour his legacy.
