Remembering Jack
John “Jack” Wilbert Aitchison, of Millbrook, passed away on December 26, 2023. One of his last wishes was to live to see his 90th birthday on Christmas Eve day, surrounded by family and friends at Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche.
Jack was born in Wallace on December 24, 1933 to Wilbert and Evelyn (Reid) Aitchison, of Millbrook. As a child, he attended the Millbrook School before moving to the North Colchester High School. He graduated from the Agricultural College (class of ’53) and began his lifetime of farming. He devoted his life to raising grain and hay crops, and his beloved cattle. He took great pride in keeping his fields in top shape and his cows always fetched top price at the auction.
Jack worked in the woods, alongside his father and brother, hauling logs with horses and making lumber in their mill. He also hauled a lot of shale from his mountain pit and was proud of all the driveways he built on the North Shore.
Although he was known to work hard, Jack also loved music and dancing. He was a long-time member of his male quartet, different choirs, and would add his tenor voice to any music event going on. He loved to dance and would “cut a rug” whenever a tune started, even to throw down his cane to dance in his later years.
Jack is survived by his wife, Gwen (Varner) and their children, Julia Sampson (Dave) and John, as well as his children from his first marriage to Sandra (MacKay): Janet Oakes (Gary), Dale, Brenda, and Dawn. He is blessed with 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Jeanne MacCara, Yvonne Taylor, Marilyn Patriquin (Cecil) and brother Glenn (Kay) and many relatives and friends.
He is pre-deceased by his parents, Wilbert and Evelyn, brother Graham, and grandson, Brandon.
Visitation will be held in Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche on Friday, December 29 from 1-4 pm. The funeral service will be at The Meeting House in West New Annan on Saturday, December 30 at 2pm. Reception to follow. Interment in Bell Gift Cemetery in the spring.
A special thank you to Dr. Copp and the staff at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital for their excellent care and to dear friend, Edie Leet.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Bell Gift Cemetery in Jack’s name, or the charity of your choice.
