«Forever In Our Hearts»
Aaron Joseph “Joey” Mattatall
November 4, 1967 – November 25, 2023
It is with disbelief and broken hearts we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Joey.
Born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Joey was the beloved son of Sharon and the late John Mattatall and proud father of Danielle (Joel), Erin (Adam), Tucker, Coulson, Myiah, and Tristan. He was delighted to welcome his grandson, Jenson, this year along with granddaughters Eden and Bliss. In simple terms, Joey was a mischievous, funny, hardworking, family man. Growing up, he fine-tuned his unique sense of humour with the help of his father and grandfather and took pleasure in carrying on the family tradition of light hearted tormenting of his siblings, his children, his nieces and nephews, and just about anyone he encountered. He enjoyed sports and kept himself out of trouble by throwing balls or hitting slap shots against the barn to hone his skills for baseball and hockey. He continued his interest in sports by coaching minor hockey and regularly attending the Truro Bearcats’ games with Coulson. After high school, Joey followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the crew at Scotsburn Dairy. He began by making the famous “Tatamagouche Butter” and worked a variety of roles before joining the ice cream division in Truro. As a child, he consistently tore his toys apart to see how they worked which turned out to be a handy skill as he learned the ins and outs of the ice cream operation. For over 37 years, his work ethic and thirst for knowledge made him an invaluable part of the Scotsburn/Agropur team as he worked his way from the production floor to management. Joey enjoyed hunting and fishing, and looked forward to taking his kids trout fishing in the spring. This was always a fun experience for them up until the point when he made them clean the fish. As a teenager, he fished lobsters with his grandfather which led to a lifelong love of being on the water. He was thankful that his “seventh” child, Joel, was a fisherman who welcomed him onboard whenever he was available.
Without a doubt Joey’s life revolved around his family and his proudest accomplishment was being a father. He was always quick to let everyone know what his kids were up to and was constantly posting and tagging them online. He was their go-to handyman, mechanic, and all-round shoulder to lean on. Always showing up when needed but not before putting on a show with a grumble or a growl. Besides his children, and grandchildren, he is survived by his mother and siblings Robert (Colleen) and Deborah (Scott), along with a slew of nieces and nephews that Uncle Joe took special pleasure in tormenting. He is also survived by the mother of his two youngest, Kandice. He was predeceased by his father as well as several aunts and uncles.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 1 at 2pm in Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche with Rev. Connie McNamara officiating. Reception will follow in the church basement. Family interment will take place in Lockerby Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Health Foundation or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the first responders, the nurses, doctors and those who stopped to help.
